How's Things Going With Kenny?

Uncomfortable Sights

As Mindy and Brian finished off their lunch in private, Kenny returned to their secretary just outside the office. The young blonde girl looked up the second Kenny opened the door, flashing him a warm smile, "Mr.Clark, based on that smile, I take it everything went well in there," Kenny couldn't help but chuckle back and nod, not ashamed that he couldn't hide his joy at all, "Is there anything you require from me?"

"Yes, actually," Kenny nodded, "Brian and Mindy are putting me on the security ****, she wanted me to talk with the head of security before I leave today,"

"Oh, of course," Rebecca nodded, "Here, please take a seat, and I'll page him up in just a moment." Kenny let out a nod and wandered away from the desk, taking a seat on the far leather couch near the elevator. Minutes passed and feeling a bit concerned that he may be a bit late getting home Kenny pulled out his cell phone, quickly dialing Brook's number.

After just a few rings he heard Brook's voice, "Hey, Kenny, what's going on?"

"Hey, I'm still down at White Tower," Kenny replied as the elevator opened and a man stepped through, approaching the desk, "I got a job, and they want me to get in the system today,"

"That's great, Kenny!" Brook cheered, "So you're gonna be a bit longer than you thought?"

"Maybe, but I just wanted to call ahead of time, you know?" Kenny replied with a small smile, "How's Ellie?"

"We're doing good, finished lunch and now we're heading up to get her moved into her new room," Brook replied with a chipper tone, "She really is happy that she's in your and Zoey's room, Kenny, I can't even explain how excited she is. I'm getting questions every ten seconds about what her mom used to have hung up on the wall, and where everything was. " Brook said with a small laugh, "I'm sure she'll have a lot of them left by the time you get back,"

"Good, because I'll answer them all," Kenny softly replied as he brought his hand up and rubbed his brow, "She's okay though? Brook, she's just happy? If she's upset about this, I need to-"

"Kenny, if anything was wrong, I'd tell you." Brook interrupted, "Now you focus on your interview or whatever, and get back here when you can, okay?"

"Right," Kenny said with a small shake of his head, fighting off the building of emotion, "I'll see you two soon, okay?"

"Alright, don't worry, talk to you soon," Brook easily replied, "Ellie, say bye to daddy!"

"Bye, Daddy!" Kenny heard his daughters distant voice shout out,

"Bye, bye, sweetie," Kenny said with a small laugh, "Bye, Brook,"

"Talk soon," Brook replied before they both hung up.

Kenny tucked his phone into his pocket and looked up only to see Rebecca peer around the man by the desk and wave him over. Kenny quickly stood up and walked over, "Mr.Clark, this is our chief of security, D-"

"Devin Harris," Kenny finished for her while the tall middle-aged man turned and looked at Kenny with a pleased smile,

"Holy fucking shit, Kenny fucking Clark," Devin grinned, "Now that's not what I expected to see today," The man chuckled before looking back at Rebecca and giving her a small wink, "We will finish our talk later,"

"Have a good day, Mr.Harris," Rebecca muttered back while keeping her head lowered, clearly a bit uncomfortable,

"It's always a good day when I get to see you, Rebecca," Devin chuckled before turning back to Kenny, "Come on, Ken, let's take a quick trip to my office,"

"Um...Rebecca, it was a pleasure meeting you," Kenny said with a bit of an awkward smile while extending his hand to the young woman,

"Likewise, Mr.Clark, I look forward to working with you," Rebecca sweetly replied while giving him a quick handshake before returning to her work.

Kenny and Devin then turned and headed back towards the elevator, entering silently before heading down to the first floor, "Uh...long time, no see Devin," Kenny said after a long minute,

"Yeah, no kidding," Devin grinned, "When was the last time I saw you...must have been...fuck, it was your wedding wasn't it?!" The blonde exclaimed with a small clap of his hands, "I remember now, yeah, yeah, Nikki and I came together and I was...yeah, you hired my band to play at the reception," He chuckled, "That was a good gig for us at the time, and you two seemed pretty happy,"

Kenny shifted slightly and cleared his throat, "Yeah, it was one of the best of my life...finally being married was perfect,"

Devin rolled his eyes but nodded, understanding that Kenny was a different kind of guy, nowhere near the same kind of free spirit. "You know, I heard about what happened a few years back," Devin suddenly said causing Kenny's head to snap over and look at him directly, "Legitimately, that sucks, and I'm sorry for your loss,"

"Oh, thanks Devin," Kenny replied with genuine surprise,

"But hey, from what I saw, you may be able to knock the carbon off the valves with Rebecca, she's great man, believe me. Last Christmas party..." Devin gave a short whistle with a little bump of his elbow. Kenny lowered his head and let out a breathy laugh, "And Jesus, you should have been here and saw Mindy's last secretary. Fuck, man, that girl was so perfect, the best ass I've ever seen. Took her out to dinner, brought her back to my place, played her some of my music and before I knew it we were in bed," Devin smiled with a little sigh, "I mean, so many women here are up for a little stress relief, and when you're on the night shift, walking around and see them pissed off from yet another long day and fight with their husbands, they are down to take a quick break in the bathroom to forget about all they're troubles,"

"Yeah...I bet," Kenny muttered back, keeping his eyes locked on the floor number that continued to fall slowly,

"Little hidden perk for this job," Devin added on with a slightly sleazy laugh.

Kenny nodded, and the pair soon went silent, Kenny not having much will to hold a conversation with Devin anymore, it was one thing for him to be this way at nine-teen but almost thirty? Part of Kenny always knew Devin wasn't going to change but he at least thought that Devin would have matured past the point he was at when they first met, though that clearly turned out to be wrong. Kenny only hoped that he wouldn't be running into Devin very often during his shifts...even if he was technically his boss now.

The pair reached the first floor and Devin lead him into the security office, where Kenny had to fill out a few quick forms then listen as Devin rattled off a few mandatory safety lessons. Kenny then received a uniform, along with a taser, pepper spray, a pair of zip tie cuffs, and a flashlight. After this, Devin brought Kenny on a quick patrol of the areas that Kenny would personally be working, the first few floors, and as well as the parking lot. Once all was said in done, it took the pair about an hour, but Kenny felt relieved that the job seemed safe enough as Devin only ever had a few major incidents with a few fired employees trying to break a window or key some cars.

"So basically that's really it, man, it's a pretty cozy job," Devin remarked as he walked with Kenny towards Brook's car, "Now you've just moved back here, today?"

"Yeah," Kenny nodded, "I just really needed to get a job for Ellie's sake, plus, I figure Brook would appreciate me bringing in some money to help pay the bills,"

"Hmph," Devin nodded before glancing around for a quick moment, "You, uh...I mean, you and Brook, you two...sharing a room?" Kenny furrowed his brow and glared back at Devin, "What?" Devin smiled, "I mean, a guy has his needs, and if I remember correctly Brook looks really close to-"

"Look, let me just say it now, please, just don't talk about my personal life, and don't talk about Zoey, alright, consider it a buried topic," Kenny sharply interrupted,

Devin slightly raised his hands, "Whoa, whoa, easy man, my bad," Devin said in an apologetic tone, "Forget I said anything." Kenny and Devin once again were silent as they continued to travel across the parking lot, suddenly Devin halted in place and let out a long, angry groan, "Oh, you've got to be fucking kidding me right now...what are you doing here?!" He called out while storming past Kenny towards a car parked a few spaces away from them. Kenny glanced at his car before looking back at the car Devin was approaching, trying to decipher who was getting out of the driver's seat.

Kenny slowly leaned against the back of his car and crossed his arms, watching as Devin swiftly closed the gap between him and the blue mini-van parked three spots away. Kenny could see a brunette girl with a dyed strip of blue hair get out of the van, her face nearly red with anger, "You and I are having a talk you worthless piece of shit!" The brunette girl screamed out. Kenny tilted his head, the girl sounded vaguely familiar, and the more he looked at her, she reminded him of someone he knew, but he just couldn't put a name to her face.

"What did I say, we're not together anymore, so don't be coming to me at my job! You need to talk to me call me first, I'm so tired of this!" Devin barked back,

"We're not talking about me and you, fuckhead, we're talking about your fucking son! Where were you yesterday?!" The girl screamed out while shoving Devin as hard as she could, though the man only took a few small steps backward,

"I was busy, you know Thursdays are band rehearsal, I have a gig coming up!" Devin scoffed, "Honestly, just get the fuck out of here, I'm not in the mood today, I got a lot of shit on my plate"

"Oh no, you're not just walking away from this like usual, asshole! I told you, Devin, I don't expect you around every day, I don't want you there at all, but Garrett does! You're his father, and you can't be bothered to show up on his fucking birthday! He was crying because he wanted to know where his father was last night!"

Devin let out a long exhale and slowly turned around, taking a few steps in a circle while running his hands through his hair, "Fuck...okay, I forgot, but I'll make it up to him. It's not a big deal,," Kenny's eyes grew, and he couldn't help but shake his head in near disgust as he continued to listen to Devin,

"You forgot?" The girl spat back, "You fucking forgot?! You are the single most pathetic man I have ever had the displeasure of knowing. I can't fucking believe I ever had sex with you!"

"Well maybe if you weren't such a slut when we met, we would have this fucking problem," Devin shot back,

"Don't you dare call Garrett a problem!" The woman warned, "The only problem here is you, and you're lack of fucking care for your son!"

"God, you're always such a fucking buzzkill. You're never fun anymore," Devin retorted, "I'll bring him to one of my shows and remember his birthday next year, alright? Happy?" Both Kenny and the woman's eyes were as wide as ever when they heard Devin say this. The only difference between them was, while Kenny felt a small burning of anger in his chest, the woman's heart almost broke. She quickly lowered her head and began to weep softly while rapidly wiping away the tears, trying to hide them from the man in front of her, "Oh geez, here come the waterworks...I have to get back to work,"

"I hate you!" The woman finally screamed out, "I don't want you near Garrett ever again!"

"You're fucking ridiculous, call me once you settle down" Devin merely replied in disinterest, "Kenny! You start in three days, be here at five!" Devin called out to the brown-haired man before stepping around the brunette woman and heading back to the tower doors. Kenny lifted a hand and ran his fingers through his hair, he took a half step towards the woman before hesitating, wondering if it was his place to get involved.

Does Kenny Go To Comfort The Woman? Who Is She?
