Chapter 23 by Amagine Amagine

Which do you choose?

Tutoring

You head back to the library and approach the asian girl at the kiosk, over which hangs a sign that says: "Potential Tutors, apply now."

"Hey," you say. "I'm interested in applying."

The girl looks up at you with shocked eyes. She blinks. Hard. "Uh...really? You? Like, this isn't a joke?"

"Why would it be?" You ask.

She tries not to visibly glance at the male student behind her. Overweight and experiencing early balding symptoms, he is buried in a textbook. On her end, she is cute, enough. But her hair is frazzled and she wears thick-rimmed glasses.

"I mean..." she stammers. "Uh. Okay. Sure. What's your name?"

"Ryan Brown," you say.

"Alright, I'm Genevieve," she says. "So...Ryan. What were your grades last year?"

You share your grades with her and are almost surprised by how good they are, when put into context. You always thought that getting a C meant failure, and that getting a B in one of your classes was a moderate success. You also didn't take a math class last year, which helped. This girl is clearly impressed by the number of As that she sees.

"Wow," Genevieve says. "Yeah...you...you aren't joking. I mean you...someone like you, y'know. You could do other things with your time. But it's fine if you're here. Really."

You're not sure what she means, but you sign the forms to become a tutor. You are told that you will be paired up with various people short-term or long-term, or perhaps be on call depending on how you are needed. You accept this and officially become a tutor.

Because of your new position, you feel encouraged to spend a part of the afternoon studying. You refresh your memory on various subjects and feel encouraged to help struggling students.
