Chapter 17 by jenny2

What's next?

Trying to cut yourself free

Think. Use your teeth. Bend forward, close your teeth on a knife handle, lift it out and drop it on the floor. Then you can lie down and feel for it with your hands.

The first part of the plan goes pretty well. Two minutes later you're looking at a fruit knife that's on the kitchen floor at your feet.

Lying down is as difficult as was standing up, and has the same effect. But you manage to stay in control and you shuffle yourself sideways until you can feel the knife under your back. Feeling carefully with your fingers you find the handle end and adjust your position so that it's under your right hand. You close your hand around it.

Now things get difficult. You roll onto your front so that your hands have room to work. The blade of the knife is pointing toward your fingers, away from your wrist ropes. You try to rotate the knife in your hand and drop it.

Back onto your back, feel for the knife and pick it up again. This time making sure that the blade's pointing back up your arm.

Fumbling with your fingers, trying to get the knife edge-on to the ropes. But is it the cutting edge or the blunt edge? You try to feel, and drop the knife again.

Several minutes later you're back in position. With the handle held precariously between your fingers you try to move the blade over the ropes. Then it slips from your fingers.

Reality sinks in. This isn't going to work. You can't grip the knife, you can't press down with it. And even if you could, you can't see what you're doing.

How long is it since Amy ran off? Must be half an hour. You have to get out of here. Look in your room. Maybe there's something in there that you could use on the ropes. And Amy can't have gone far. When she comes back she'll untie you.
