Try to make amends.

At your words and touch, his eyes start open. You can see a jolt of pain register across his face before he sees you, and attempts a smile.

"Good morning, Paladin," he croaks. You laugh quietly and bitterly at the honorific. "I am glad to see you yet live. When I saw you fall, I feared the worst."

"I failed you, Ramos. I tried..." it is hard to get the words out as sobs come without warning. "I tried to even the odds you faced." He reaches for your hand and snakes his fingers in between yours, making quiet shushing sounds.

"Sabine, you fought bravely. If I had not missed my shot... well, things may be very different now. I left you with an impossible task. Things are as they are now, child. We must see what fate has in store for us."

Nodding weakly, sobs barely under control, you clutch his hand tightly. He shuffles himself closer to you, and gently puts an arm across your body. The two of you fall into some semblance of comfort and lie there in silence. He closes his eyes but you continue to watch him, feeling the warmth of his touch and the comfort of his closeness, eyes lingering on his proud face and the dark skin of his fingers entwined with yours.

"Ramos, I have been thinking," you whisper. He responds with a quiet Mm that you take as invitation to go on. "I recognise those markings on their faces. It is alike to those borne by the daemons that attacked the abbey. The fact that they were out here... looking for me... and that they bear daemon marks, they must mean to take me back to their lord." He opens his eyes and looks at you with disquiet. You shuffle a little closer, gasping at the pain in your shoulder, but you are now mere inches from your companion. "Ramos, when they have me in their clutches the daemons will enslave me; turn me into a breeding slut... and what's worse, they'll make me want it. I don't know what they will do to you... they may kill you or enslave you too. I don't-" you **** slightly on the words. "I don't want..."
