Chapter 27

Run, finish them off, or?
Try to finish them.
Taking advantage of your success in goading the ranger you lead her on a merry chase. Hoping that her anger might blind her to the dangers you head closer to the borders of the glade where you had already laid a plethora of traps. These ones would be harder for the adventurers to get out of. Deep pits, sturdy nets, and dangerous deadfalls. All awaited if you could lead the angry Shay the right way. If you could get her out of the picture the warrior would be easier to handle; and the mage had, as of yet, not re-entered the picture.
Your vision was a blur of shades of brown and green as you rushed through the forest, pursued by the crashing sounds of the ranger as she vaulted through the growth after you. She was gaining, that didn’t bode well. Perhaps she had higher agility than you? Still, you knew this territory much better and used that knowledge to your full advantage to prolong the chase.
Soon enough you saw some of the markers that you’d placed to warn yourself and your minions of traps present in the area. This one was a net snare. Perfect. With how agiley the ranger had been following you weren’t sure that a pit trap or a deadfall would have been as effective. You saw the tell tale signs of the camouflaged net in your path and you leapt over it without breaking stride. You didn’t wait around to see if the ranger was ensnared by the trap or not, trusting in your keen sense of hearing to notify you if the trap had been triggered. A mere instant after your passing you heard the rushing rustling of released tension as the trap was sprung. A storm of cursing followed and you smirked to know that the ranger wouldn’t be free of this trap any time soon. Time to use the reprieve to your advantage.
You circled back and took stock of the ensnared hero. The net was not finely woven, but sturdy and made to maximally entangle a humanoid. The design had worked as intended and the sight of Shay ensnared with her limbs askew in what was most assuredly an uncomfortable manner certainly entertained you. One of her arms stuck out in front of her mostly free of the net flailing and trying to get a hold of the strands that were wrapped about her. Her legs were bent up behind her back, knees awkwardly protruding from the net. Her face was turned sideways away from her free arm with the other held firmly against her chest, sandwiched between her modest breasts.
You laughed aloud at the helplessly held young woman. Served her right for chasing you through your own territory. At the sound of your mirth she began cursing yet again and yelling at you to let her down.
“Fuck you! You fucking mutt, get your tail over here and let me down!! You afraid of a fair fight?!” She cried and flailed more, attempting to free herself and failing spectacularly
“Fair?” You ask, snorting in amusement. “You think a fight with two adventurers that are a higher level than me is fair? Yea, right. No thank you. I’m sure you’re used to mobs that you can mow through easily; but I’d prefer to not die.” You take a moment to retrieve a crudely crafted metal kunai from your bandolier. It was far from accurate at a distance, but from this vantage it would serve. You take stock of the remaining sealed wooden tubes with your various poisons and salves before selecting one and popping it open.
“What are you doing? What is that shit? You better not fuck with me! Sheila’s going to be here soon and she’ll kick your ass!” Shay struggles more and you watch with a faint smirk on your face while remaining silent. The substance you coat your kunai with is a weak poison. It will do a small amount of damage over time and basically put the limbs of its target to sleep. Against a higher level adventurer it would be useless; but for Shay here it would do. You doubt that she’ll be at all effective in combat under its effect if she does manage to get free before you take care of her ally. You coat your kunai with a liberal dose and with a careful throw you strike the easy target of her protruding arm. Secure in the knowledge that the poison would do its work on her, you leave, ignoring her continuing cries and threats to stalk the more dangerous warrior.
You know that the other hero would have been on your trail, following quickly but not as quickly as Shay. She was strong, but from seeing what you have of her you don’t think that her agility is up to par with yours. You assume that she’ll be drawn by Shay’s incessant yelling, and set up for an ambush. You use the rest of your opened dose of poison to coat several more crude throwing knives and wait out of sight for the warrior. You don’t wait for long.
“Shay, I told you to wait, dammit.” The panting voice of the warrior cries out as she draws near enough to communicate with her partner. “You know I can’t move as fast as you…” Her voice trails off as she sees the predicament that her friend is in. A smirk appears on her face and she laughs heartily as she approaches. “Haha! Serves you right, going ahead like that. Weird though, I’ve never seen a monster use so many traps at this stage of the game. You okay?”
“No! He hit me. I think it was poishoned or someshing.” Shay’s words had begun to slur under the numbing effects of the poison. “I can’t feel my legsh, or armsh, or fashe.” Sheila snorts, the amusement at seeing her friend bested like this by a low level warg of all things dulling her sense of caution. That’s a mistake you’ll quickly remedy. You move silently, ghosting into position and readying your knives. You let them fly one after another in quick succession, not taking any chances with the amazonian warrior girl. One kick from her had been enough.
The knives fly silently for their target, the first two sink into the exposed flesh of her shoulder. The girl reacts quickly enough after that to deflect the last projectile; and her amusement quickly vanishes as you forcefully remind her that she is not out of danger yet.
You hope that the larger dose of poison works quickly enough to help subdue your target and you move quickly to ready yourself to face her directly. You circle her warily and watch for signs of movement or weakness. Sheila turns slowly to remain facing you, not yet going for an attack.
“That hurt you know?” She straightens after a moment and reaches back to pluck the kunai free of her, tossing the blades aside almost flippantly. You worry for a moment that her constitution is too hardy to have been affected by your weak, simple poison. “Jesus, I didn’t even want to fight you. That was all Shay. You sure we can’t make amends? This is my alt account. I wanted to experience the update from a new player’s perspective. I have never seen an event anything like this before! It’s really cool, it’s almost like you’ve got a mind of your own!” She peers at you inquisitively and you’re caught off guard by her excitement. Almost like? Of course you have a mind of your own. You always…. Or has it always been this way? It certainly wasn’t before the update you realize. You can remember the endless cycles of **** and respawning. It wasn’t until your last ****, just before the update that anything had changed.
Thinking about it for a moment you realize that you really have no idea what the game as a whole was like before the update, and even less of what it’s like now. Maybe you should hear what Sheila has to say?
Hear her out?
