Chapter 10 by amalgam amalgam

How do you start?

Try making a Voodoo doll.

The zombie protocol looks a tad complicated, and also involves more direct contact with the person than a Voodoo doll does, and so the doll trick is probably best to start with.

After returning all the Voodoo books, you consult your scribbled notes for making the doll. All living things (sentient ones, most of all) leave behind an aura upon everything they touch. The longer they have contact with a particular item, whether it be an article of clothing or a pencil, the more of that person's aura is imprinted upon said item. The body of the living being itself is the ultimate "item," of course (this is actually the basis of zombification), however that carries significant complications which you won't be getting into just yet! Nonetheless, even a tiny part of the body such as a strand of hair is good enough to gain control over the victim. It's this kind of efficacy from something so small and so numerous that makes the Voodoo doll an easy place to start.

-If- you can start, that is. You've been here so long that every other visitor has already gone home. Well, it doesn't matter anyway. You'll need to acquire a belonging -and- you'll need to know the person so that you can observe the effects later (the Instant Voodoo Doll has yet to be invented, it seems).

You're about to leave when a voice calls from across the room. Turning, you see the helpful librarian in her navy blue gown, a black leather purse slung over her shoulder. She approaches casually with a warm smile on her face. "Finally finished?" she asks. Indeed you've been here awhile, but so has she. "Did you stick around for me?" you wonder.

"Ah, not much. You looked so interested; I didn't have the heart to shoo you out," she replies, "Anyway I've got to close up."

"No problem."

The librarian leads you outside where the sun has already gone down for the evening. When she turns around to lock up, her full-bodied mop of black hair comes prominently into view. Each strand is serendipitously curled, as if inviting you to hook your fingers around them and pull.

Will you take something from the librarian?
