Chapter 11 by amalgam amalgam

Will you take something from the librarian?

Pluck her hair.

"Ow!" The librarian spins and grabs the back of her head, glaring at you with stern, accusatory eyes. "Did you just pluck my hair?"

"I didn't do anything!" you insist, "It must've gotten caught on your purse or something." The black leather bag does have a large golden clasp that tends to catch things. You quickly put your hands in your pockets.

The woman's eyebrows relax and she again looks like the accomodating librarian you just talked to. "Oh, of course..." she mutters, "I'm sorry I accused you." You tell her that there was no harm done, and you both go your respective ways.

Later at night you find yourself in an empty lot somewhere behind your residence hall. There isn't much light here, but considering the nature of your activity it's probably best to stay unseen and unheard.

"Use material that was once alive to channel the energy of the spirit," says your custom handbook. "Use soft material that can be bent without breaking." Most plants fit the bill pretty well, and they're easy to find as long as you have your flashlight going. The hard part is assembling it all into a human-shaped figure, but you even have that down after about half an hour. If only -passersby- would stop -passing by- this could be done much quicker.

"Hey...what?"
"I thought I saw something moving over there!"
"Where?"
"There! In the grass! It was huge."
"That grass hasn't been cut for ages. Even a mouse could make the grass shake like that."
"Oh my god, I don't want to stick around for that either!"

Your prone form rises out of the grass as the group scampers away, their voices soon fading into nothingness. They can go back to their inane chatter. Meanwhile you have important things to do, like trace out the Circle of Spirit as you have photocopied it in your book. Finding an area clear of grass and a large stick, you begin to carve out shapes and heiroglyphics through the dirt. When it's finished, you ready the grass doll and produce the librarian's hairs from your pocket.

"Bind the victim's hair tightly about the doll," your notes read. As there is no better place, you wind the black strands around the doll's neck, like a collar on a dog or a ****. Such imagery will be amusingly appropriate if everything goes as planned.

With the complete Voodoo doll placed in the center of the Spirit Circle, the final step is to recite the necessary incantations. They are in a tongue you can't fully comprehend, but as far you can tell, they say something like:

"Once full-spirited
Now unmade
Once was free
Is now a ****

"Soul tainted
Throughout and all
Ye shall be commanded
By this d--"

A search light cuts through the darkness. A campus security officer is in plain sight just before you drop into some nearby shrubs. Did she see you? The cackle of the cop's radio answers your question.

" krrr Suspected nine-ten-A, requesting backup at the rear of MacLaren Hall, over. krrr "

You stay silent as the officer cautiously scans the area for your whereabouts. Eventually her spotlight lands on the Spirit Circle, and she descends upon it quickly. Then, just a second later, she descends upon you.

"Hold it right there!"

What do you do?
