Chapter 9 by Openmind Openmind

What's next?

Trenzalore, where it all leads to.

The Doctor, Strax, Jenny, Vastra and Clara moved through the graveyard, The Doctor and Strax leading the way, Clara just behind them, and the two lesbian lovers taking up the rear.

"What do you mean your grave?" Clara asked for the third time.

The Doctor sighed and turned around to look at her, stopping in his tracks. "Look. I can travel through time, I can be anywhere, at any point, at any moment in history, from the very first moment when the cosmic storm first began, to the very last when the final dying ember of the universe burns itself into dust leaving nothing behind... In all that vastness, in all that infinite time, at some point, at some... terrible point... Of course I'm going to have died." He said, motioning to the massive TARDIS in the distance.

Clara followed his motion, looking at the monolithic TARDIS, then back to the small blue box behind them. "So this is some... Future point? Your grave in the far future, the place you're going to die?" She asked, tears filling her large brown eyes.

The Doctor nodded, and solemnly said. "Yes..." Then shook his head, looking annoyed at himself. "No, no, well... Sort of... Maybe... I dunno, that's the problem with Time Travel, you never know what's going to happen next, time isn't set in stone. Not all of it anyway."

The small group continued to move through the graveyard till Vastra spoke up. "The thing I don't understand is; How did Doctor Simeon know about the Mothers? About you!?" She asked, shaking her head. "Something is not right here, Doctor." Vastra said, shaking her head. "I do not like it. It smells like a trap." Strax agreed. "Perhaps if we were to launch an all out nuclear strike upon the TARDIS monument we could..." Strax tried suggesting but was cut off by the Doctor. "It's not a monument."

All eyes looked at him, all equally confused. "It's the TARDIS, my TARDIS. Trapped her for a millennia, the bigger on the inside is starting to bleed out..." A tear formed in his eye. "...Where else would they bury me?"

The Doctor took a few more steps forwards, when one of the gravestones caught his eye. He moved towards it slowly, eyes swelling with tears as he placed his hand on the name.

"River..." He said, almost crying. His company halted behind him, allowing him a moment of grievance before the militaristic mind of the Sontaran kicked in. "Sir, I am sorry for the loss of Mr. Song, but we must keep going. We can't waste any time here." The nurse pleaded. The Doctor nodded to him, and sniffed. "Y-yeah... Yeah... I'll, uh... I'll catch you up." He told the others. The Paternoster Gang, looked at one another for a moment, and nodded, moving along, knowing the old Time Lord would follow along in his own time, leaving only Clara to care for the old man.

"Who... Who was she?" Clara asked, taking a few steps towards him, standing about ten feet away.

"She was... Was..." The Doctor tried to find the words to articulate how his daughter and wife of the future could be one and the same, but eventually gave up. "... Important." He finally settled on. "So, very, very important."

Clara closed her eyes, somehow feeling the loss The Doctor was experiencing on a deeper level than just empathy. The governess took a step forwards and placed her hand on The Doctor's shoulder. "It's like you said... Time... Time can be changed right? It doesn't mean she's gone in---WHAHHAAAAAAA"

The ground beneath them suddenly collapsed, giving way to a massive hole in the ground, the slick mud beneath acting as a slide for the pair to slide down, falling for almost 25 seconds before collapsing into a narrow cave with a loud THUD.

They both climbed to their feet, wiping the dirt from themselves as they looked around their new location. "What just happened?" Clara asked.

The Doctor was spinning round, making odd noises as he tried to think, and then suddenly snapped his fingers and spun round to look at Clara with a large grin on his face. "I know what happen!" He informed her.

Clara smirked back at him, and waited expectantly. "... And...?" She prodded. "We fell down a hole!" The Doctor declared, arms up in a triumphant victory!

"Brilliant." Clara congratulated him, sarcastically. The Doctor shook his head. "No, no, don't you see? We fell down a hole..." He repeated. Clara nodded. "Yeah, got that bit, I think I figured it out when we... Fell down the hole." The Doctor groaned and shook his head again, arms outstretched in an exacerbated fashion. "Humans, always so slow on the up take. There was no grave. River..." He spun round to indicate their surroundings. "...Isn't here."

Clara nodded, slowly getting it. "So... If the grave wasn't real... Then... What was it?" She asked.

The Doctor smirked, thrusting his hands into his pockets. "I think it's a short cut...."

Back Above Ground

The Paternoster Gang, came running back to where they had last seen the Doctor and Clara, and where they had heard the scream... And saw nothing.

Vastra ordered Strax and Jenny to remain where they were on the path, while she investigated the area. After a few minutes she returned, reporting that she could find no sign of their companions, nor of any cause for their disappearance.

The group spoke for a while and determined the best course of action, would be to stick together, and head up towards the TARDIS, save however many Mothers were taken, then return to find the Doctor if they had not found him by then.

Below Ground

The Doctor and Clara had made their way to the TARDIS, and were climbing up a long ladder that lead to a hallway which the Doctor recognized as being close to the main control room. They moved silently down the hall till they arrived at an open door that lead to the TARDIS console room, the Doctor peered through it. The TARDIS console room was comprised of the bottom floor, where the wearing for the Console could be found, a second, smaller platform (the Doctor was currently looking out from), the main platform which usually held the Console itself, and a higher catwalk.

As The Doctor peered into the room, he saw five people on the main platform, River Song, Amy Pond, Donna Nobel, Doctor Simeon, and a fifth person who he couldn't quiet see as Amy was standing in the way. In the middle of all of them, was a tall thin light suspended in mid air.

"It was a minor skirmish, by the Doctor's blood-soaked standards. Not exactly the Time War, but enough to finish him. In the end, it was too much for the old man." Simeon was saying, back to where the Doctor was now, eyes glued to the light in the center of the room. "Good riddance." The unknown person said, his voice sounded masculine, so The Doctor guessed it was probably a man.

"How would you know!?" Amy shouted at the man who was standing in front of him. "You've never even met him!"

The Doctor slowly started to creep into the room, followed silently by Clara.

"Haven't I, Amy? Perhaps you're right, perhaps I haven't, perhaps I never did, or never will... It doesn't matter, because he stole you, swooped in and kidnapped you, you loved me and now you don't even remember!" At these words, the Doctor froze, halfway up the stairs to the main console.

"I've never seen you before in my life!" Amy barked. "Because of something he did! All those years ago, I don't know what it was, I don't know how he did it! But somehow, in that cave, he 'erased' me, and used you as a breeding pig."

The Doctor stood up straight, and saw, to his horror... The Face of an old, and very dear friend...

"Rory...?" The Doctor said, in total shock.

All heads whipped round to see the Doctor climbing the last few steps to the main platform of the Console room.

"You..." Rory spat, his voice a menacing growl. "...What did you do to her!?" He shouted, drawing a roman sword from its hilt.

The Doctor took a step back, hands up. "Rory! I didn't do anything! You... You died!" The Doctor told him.

"Don't listen to his lies." Simeon said, moving to Rory's side. "He's corrupted your bride, she's so taken by his evil she can't even recognize her truest love."

The Doctor shook his head. "That's not how it happened, Rory, please, you have to listen to me!" The Doctor said, being backed into the bannister by the point of Rory's sword. "How are you even alive?" He asked.

"Simeon, he has contacts beyond your understanding Doctor." Rory explained. "I trusted you. Looked up to you. I never saw you for the monster you really are." Rory said, raising the sword to strike The Doctor down. "NO!" Four women cried out in unison, Clara, Amy, River and Donna all rushing to restrain Rory.

Rory was pulled back by the women, his sword falling from his hand, only to be grabbed by Amy, who kicked picked it up and held it to the Centurion's neck.

"Amy..." Rory said, fighting back tears as his once fiancé held him at blade point. The other women let go of the man and stepped back.

"Amy don't hurt him!" The Doctor shouted, rushing towards the group, wincing in pain, and placed his hand on the blade, looking into Amy's eyes.

"What? Why? he tried to kill you Doctor! He's clearly a psychopath! He kept telling me we were supposed to be married, that I... I..." He voice trailed off as she stared at the Doctor's serious face.

"Rory..." The Doctor said, not taking his eyes off of Amy, who still held the sword to Rory's throat. "...Look at him, Amy, it's Rory Williams..."

Rory's eyes moved from Amy, to stare in disbelief at The Doctor.

"...Clever Rory, beautiful Rory, kind, funny, amazing Rory!" The Doctor proclaimed, moving one hand to his chest, grabbing tightly his vest, seeming to be in pain. "Y-you need to remember him, you need to remember Rory! Prisoner Zero, he was there, when we were in Venice and the Vampires were closing in, HE. WAS. THERE. when I disappeared for all those years, leaving the scared little girl in that big house all alone, who was there for you?" The Doctor asked, Amy looked away, trying to remember the name of the boy who she played with as a kid, the boy who played her Raggedy Doctor.

Rory couldn't believe what he was seeing, the man he'd been demonizing for the past, he wasn't sure how long... What was going on?

"Oi! Doctor Jekyll!" Donna shouted, suddenly pulling The Doctor out of the moment and back to reality.

He turned to see Simeon standing in front of the light, a pistol was drawn and in his hand.

"Worry not, Donna Nobel. I have no intention of firing this weapon upon anyone in the room." He said, not even looking at the group behind him.

Amy and Rory were the only two who seemed to not be paying any attention, both staring wide eyes at one another.

"What is that light Doctor?" Clara asked, moving behind the Time Lord slightly, but before The Doctor could answer. Simeon piped up. "For me? Peace, eternal. For him? Pain everlasting."

Donna shook her head. "I don't get it, was that supposed to answer anything?" She asked, looking at River behind her, who simply looked down, whispering something to herself. That to Donna, sounded almost suspiciously like 'not yet, spoilers, not yet, spoilers, not yet, spoilers.' over and over again.

"I told you this was my grave, where I was buried. What were you expecting, a body? Bodies are boring. I've had loads of them. Time travel is damage. It's like a tear in the fabric of reality..." He pointed at the light, defiantly. "That is the scar tissue of my journey through the universe. My path through time and space from Gallifrey to Trenzalore." The Doctor began to sway on the spot. "Which... Which is why... Why I shouldn't be here..." The Doctor said collapsing to the ground.

The Mother's of Gallifrey rushed to The Doctor's side, Clara first among them, Amy still with Rory.

"The Doctor's life is a open wound. And an open wound can be entered" Simeon said, taking a step forward and disappearing in the light. "NO! Somebody stop him!" Clara shouted. "Simeon, NO!" The Doctor shouted, trying to get up, trying desperately to help. "It'll kill you! Burn you up, your body can't survive the trip through the raw time stream!" The Doctor starts to writhe in agony, screaming in pain as The Doctor's time stream turns from blue to red.

"Oh dear god..." River said, eyes wide. "...A universe without the Doctor... There will be consequences." She told the group...

Out Side the TARDIS

Jenny, Strax and Vastra stand outside the TARDIS console room, not knowing how to get through. "Ma'am." Jenny said, staring up at the sky and pointing. "Yes, dear?" Vastra asked, from her position by the seemingly solid stone wall. "The stars... They're goin' out." She told her lover.

"What!?" Vastra shouted, rushing to Jenny's side and staring up at the night's sky. "Oh Goddess..." She said, turning her head to look at her wife, who was staring wide eyed at her, staring at her as if she'd never seen her before. "Wh-what are you?!?" She cried out. "What do you mean? Jenny?" She asked, moving closer to the love of her life, reaching out a hand to grab her. "DON'T TOUCH ME YOU FREAK!" Jenny scream, leaping back away from Vastra.... Then she slowly faded away. "JENNY! Goddess no! NOT JENNY PLEASE!!!" Vastra cried out, collapsing to her knees.

"Reptile scum." Strax's voice came from behind her, but it sounded cold, distant and harsh.

Vastra turned her head and looked at her friend, who lunged at her, attacking his former friend.

"Strax!" Vastra pleaded. "It's me! I'm you're friend!" She tried to reason with the Sontaran as he strikes her hard enough to knock her to the ground.

"DIE REPTILE!" Strax shouts as he grabs his weapon and aims it towards her... Then he too disappears... Leaving Vastra alone...

Back Inside The TARDIS

"GRAAAAA!" The Doctor screams out. Donna, squeezes his hand, trying to reassure him. "You're gonna be alright." She keeps telling him.

Clara stands and rushes to the edge of the Doctor's time stream, followed quickly by River. "We have to go in there." River tells Clara, who nods, understanding. "I'll deal with Simeon, you work collateral." River instructs and both step into the time stream without a second thought....
