Chapter 62 by ThatSubtleTouch

What do you find?

Treachery, Part Drux

As you approach the Lair, you hear noises up ahead through the trees; you start to move faster. The scene that greets you as you burst through the trees floods you with devastation.

The Lair is in ruins.

The Wall of Thorns is tattered beyond recognition, more akin to a ring of firewood than the impenetrable wall of nature that you left behind. A few black spider stragglers seem to be tearing down what is left of your home, ensuring its destruction is complete. With panic they spy you in the distance and hurriedly begin to flee. Righteous fury flows through your sap-ladden veins and your roots shoot forward with unprecedented speed despite your bloodied status. You can't help but note that the ground beneath you is terribly churned, as if the black spiders had attacked in a great horde that would have left this clearing a seething black ocean, as you close in on the first of the black spiders and lash out at them with the fury only the exhausted can express. Your vines make short work of the nearest of the black spiders as the others flee in myriad directions, clearly routing before your overwhelming superiority. The red fury you felt begins to fade slightly and transform into the initial panic you experienced as you reach the middle of the ruins of your premature fortress. You hurriedly overturn the brambles and thorns of your home, praying not to find the xp reward for your friend and lover Dana in amongst the maelstrom of destruction that is your home. You toss aside everything in your search, eventually concluding Dana is, still, alive.

This leaves you with a predicament that, in some ways, is even more terrible as you contemplate the thought that Drux must have decided to capture Dana for the same purpose that the three heroes you helped them subdue now serve and the earlier attack against the forest spiders was merely a feint to draw you away from her. A feint which, you bitterly muse, you fell for.

You are left with a choice, do you waste precious minutes pursuing the straggling remnants of the attackers to sate your anger? Or do you fly back into the forest in the hopes of catching the abductors of Dana before they can return her to their nest?

What is your next course of action?
