Trade with Indian allies
This day, you've been assigned to help bring good to the colony's closest Indian friends, the Wampanoags. The draft animals are still needed at the farm, so few could be spared, and your ample strength made you suited to the job. A large backpack filled with goods is strapped to your shoulders as you walk through the narrow paths with your caravan. "A little spooky, isn't it?" you say to the other man, a fellow employee of Winthrop's, glancing around. He shrugs. "Eh, it's friendly territory. It's a little quiet because a lot of them have died of some sickness. These woods used to be a bit busier." He lapses back into silence after that, not being much of a talker.
The rest of the trip, though similarly spooky, was uneventful. Your strong back carried your load without much trouble, given enough rests. You stroll into the smallish Indian village, your first. Several long, rectangular building of wood and bark dominate the scene, some as much as fifteen feet tall. Loose bands of Indians, equipped in cold weather clothing, walk about attending to various tasks. An Indian man, looking more important based on his more elaborate dress, comes to greet you. "Greetings white men. You have come to trade, yes?" he asks. Your companion takes over, telling him that you come from the Winthrop farm. The native man nods. "Tell me, have your people come about the Pequot and Narragansett as well?" You're totally lost, and your companion does not look much better off. "They're at war, right?" he asks, curious. The Indian continues to talk as he directs the exchange of goods between your groups. "No, that is why I wanted talk. They have stopped fighting. They will likely turn on us soon" he says with great gravity. Your blood turns cold at the thought of a war with wild savages. You are strong, but not a military man by any means. The chief sighs. "It may be years yet as they rest, but I think war comes eventually." Your companion straightens. "We'll be sure to bring word to the settlement. Thank you for your information sir." The chief nods and forces a smile. "Of course. Our allies must know of threats to us all. We wish you a safe journey back."
Soon after you were on the way back, carrying goods to the farm. You couldn't help but worry all the way back. Is war really inevitable?
