The Virgin Continent

It is the Age of Discovery. For thousands of years, the Eastern Hemisphere has conducted its business internally, largely oblivious to the other half of the world, separated from it by two vast oceans. However, advances in sailing have allowed this obstacle to be overcome by those brave enough to attempt it. Vast forests cover this dark territory, which has but a few urban centers spaced between immense tracts of uncultivated land. Old kingdoms and empires eagerly take the chance to explore and conquer this territory, competing fiercely for dominance. The Spanish, English, and French will become the major powers in this race, though many smaller powers will make their mark as well.

Europe has become insufferable to many. Population growth strains the limited productive lands available, most of which are in the hands of a handful of powerful families. There is now, however, a release valve for the social pressure. Those enough can strike out for the Americas to try to make their fortune. Most will not, but for a great many people their options are to live in squalor at home or risk their lives in the uncivilized lands. Debtors, criminals, people without prospects, the poor, the persecuted, the curious, the adventurous; these are some of those willing to risk it all. Some hope for a chance to strike it rich, other hope to live in peace, while others simply want to escape their past.
