Chapter 8 by mask mask

Where do you decide to go?

Towards the open ocean!

You had been cooped up in a small world all this time. You are made to roam large distances, and the ocean's song beckons you to explore her free waters.

As you swim above some corral reef, not tempted by the vibrant life below, you revel in your freedom. You can do anything now.

Once you reach the edge of the continental shelf you could begin scouting in the pelagic ocean for your midnight meal of jellyfish by diving into the twilight zone.

Alternatively you could continue swimming to the colder waters of the north or south seas, as you were currently doing. You're body was especially well adapted to handling colder waters unlike many other merfolk of the reptile variety. Growing up you'd always been curious about them since none of the adult reptiles in the reptile sanctuary had ever been there.

Still on the continental shelf, you spy a great shadow on the surface. Around it swirl a great number of sharks and other fish and you think you catch sight of a few merfolk figures.

As you watch, the shadow on the surface detaches from the horde of sea creatures, and with surprising speed cruses away.

You suddenly realise what it is. A human boat. You'd never really spared much thought to humans before. They were all surface dwelling creatures, and your species was not particularly well adapted to manoeuvring on land. Only females left the seas to lay a clutch of eggs or gravely injured individuals who were beached, too feeble to not be taken by the tide.

But now that you're faced with a human presence so soon you feel a faint curiosity awaken inside of you.

What do you decide to do?
