Chapter 3 by Hollin Hollin

Landing on the planet

Touch down on the alien world

As the orb of the alien world grows large in the viewport of your shuttle, you can't help but study it through the shatter proof glass. While a part of you is undeniably shaken by the loss of your ship...your scientific curiosity is definitely aroused. You knew for certain that this world was uncharted, so this would be the first time any human had set foot on it. What wonders would you find there? New species of lifeforms? Ancient ruins from some defunct alien civilization? You couldn't help but feel a little giddy at the prospect. You knew you had a duty to try and regroup with any of your crewmates that might have survived the destruction of the Jaeger. But if you managed to do a little scientific study along the way? Who could fault you for that...

Your pod set you down gently in a clearing in a mountainous valley. Checking first to ensure the air outside was breathable and safe from bacteria, you pop the hatch to the pod and take a deep breath....savoring the freshness in contrast to the always slightly stale air you were used to on the ship. You realize it had been over a month since you last set foot on a real, living world...and you take moment to enjoy the sensation. Reality begins to intrude, however, as you note the planet's sun appears to be about halfway down to the horizon. And judging based upon where you've landed, that it could get a bit cold at this altitude. Time to do and inventory of your supplies.

You check the pod, and your options there are relatively sparse. You retrieve a standard hand laser and a personal scanner from a panel in the seat of your pod. On the other side, you find a couple of packs of dried rations that should last you a couple of days at most. And most importantly....no water. That was certainly going to be a problem as well. Powering on the scanner, you take note of your surroundings. It quickly points you toward a spot several kilometers down the valley. At this distance, you couldn't tell what it was sensing. But that directions was as good as any.

Gathering up your meager supplies, you set off toward where the scanner was directing you...

Walking down the valley.
