Chapter 10 by Blues32 Blues32

Does Toph freak out when she "sees" the car?

Toph is a little weirded out.

Out of habit, I reached into my pocket and pulled out my keys, clicking the "unlock" button. The car made very little noise...at least to my ears. Toph, however, jumped, latching onto my arm.

"What was that?" she hissed, her pale eyes wide. She squeezed my arm to her chest. "John, what was that sound? Help me out here, you've got the eyes!" She sounded more annoyed by my silence then afraid, but there was a bit of fear in her unseeing eyes.

How do you explain this sort of thing? "It's just a car," I ventured. "It's...it's like a cart that pulls itself...sort of. C'mon, get in and I'll show you."

Shivering from the cold, she took a step closer. "Get in how?" she whispered, feeling along the metal of the car. "You mean on top of it?"

I opened the door for her and gently helped her in. She wriggled around on the seat a bit. "Oooh...comfy," she commented, running her fingers along the soft seat. "...floor's a bit grimy though."

"Heh...I, uh...really should clean it out sometime," I replied before getting in on my side. "Okay, you're going to hear and feel some weird shit in a second," I warned her. "Don't worry. It's supposed to do it. Trust me, okay?" I squeezed her hand in reassurance.

She turned and socked my arm. ...ow. No, really. Ow. "Yeah, I trust you," she replied, a smile on her face. "Let'er rip." I turned the key and the car started up. Her hand shot to mine, squeezing again. "It's supposed to do that...it's supposed to do that..." she whispered.

I turned the heat on, making her tense a little. "John, what's that?" she asked, reaching out and feeling the slightly heated air.

"It's just the heat," I soothed. "The car can blow hot or cold hair, depending on the setting. Since you're soaked and shivering, I put the heat on for you."

"Hmph...you don't have to talk to me like I'm twelve," she retorted. "...thanks, though." I started to drive. "...soooo..." Toph began, "...how far away do you live? I can't wait to get out of these wet clothes...and maybe...thank you right for all your help." That sly grin spread across her face. "If I can wait that long."

Does Toph thank me now or wait until we get to my house?
