Chapter 2
by Funtimes
What's next?
Tom (SR 98) comes home to find his wife and daughter with low scores.
Tom got hired as an apprentice electrician right out of high school. It was hard work for little pay, but he wouldn't have traded that time for anything because that was when he met his future wife Heather, who got hired as his employer's secretary a few months after he was hired. They dated for three years before they both decided it was time to get married.
Their original plan was for both of them to work after their marriage, but Tom's boss (Richard) offered to let him take the electrician's test on his first day back from his honeymoon.
After aceing the test, Richard offered Tom a job as a full-time electrician for more than what Tom and Heather made combined. This allowed them to change their plans and have Heather stay home. Just in time, too, because Heather surprised Tom with the news of their upcoming daughter (Emma) just a few days after her last day of work
It worked out perfectly; Heather was able to stay home and focus on raising Emma while Tom's career took off, A career that could take him away from home for up to a week at a time.
Nineteen years and many promotions later, Tom was the youngest branch manager in the company. The next highest job in the company was the president. So there was no more available promotion for him unless he were to buy the company, which, if rumors were true, was when Richard wanted to retire, Tom was going to be the first person he was going to offer to sell the company to.
Just like every other day, Tom walked into his home with a big grin, excited to see his beautiful wife and growing 19-year-old daughter. "Honey, I'm home. Today at work, the oddest thing happened. A government official came around and gave us all watches that had our social rank on them. I am supposed to be lucky because I have a 98, but I have no clue." He removed his dusty work boots and continued, "Have they gotten to you guys yet?"
Tom rounded the corner into the dining room to find his wife and daughter sitting at the table, silently staring at each other. This wasn't the first time this happened and it always meant that something has happened that Tom had to handle. "So what happened now?"
Emma looked up at her father with fear in her eyes. "It's our watches."
Tom's parental naturally kicked in. "What about them? Do you think they are ugly or something? Because I am sure we can pay the government for a different model."
Tom was so focused on his daughter that he missed the fact that his wife refused to look at him as she said, "No... It's our scores. They are low?"
Tom's eyes locked worriedly onto his daughter. "How low? 90... 85. Just tell me what they are, and I am sure I can call in favors with people I know in the government to add a few points to them."
Emma's eyes drift away from her father in shame as she answers, "Mine 64 and Mom 58." She intentionally said her mother's numbers last to swift her father's attention off her numbers, and it worked because Tom focused on that number: "58... how? The government office said everyone starts at 100, and your point only lowers if you break the law or someone has a negative opinion of you. Your mother only leaves the house to see people she likes, so how did she LOSE THAT MANY POINTS!"
Emma knew her mother wasn't going to rat herself out, and she didn't want her father to remember that she was only 6 points higher, so she ratted her mother out. "Dad, she's been cheating on you."
That hit Tom like a brick wall, causing him to scream, "What!"
It was such a surprise to Tom that he didn't fully believe it until Heather said, "Honey, I am so sorry!"
"Wait, this isn't some sick joke... With who and how long?"
Emma whispers, "Your boss and a VERY LONG TIME!"
Anger filled Tom's body as he realized someone who he trusted the most, someone who he had let him into his house countless times, someone he considered his close friend had been fucking his wife "RICHARD... WAIT HOW DO YOU KNOW?"
Only then does Emma realize she has said too much, drawing too much attention to her involvement. Causing her throat to clam up.
In the silence, Heather spoke up, "Because I had to tell her."
It took everything Tom had not to put his fist through the wall as his whole world turned upside down. "And what in this world would **** you to tell our daughter that you were cheating on me?
Heather's voice cracked as she answered, "Because she was dating Gerret." Gerret is Richard's son, who is four years older than Emma, and he dated Emma during her freshman year of high school.
"What did Gerret walk in on you two or something, and you were afraid he was going to tell her?"
Heather didn't have the courage to tell her husband the whole truth, so she just shook her head no and hoped that would be enough, but it wasn't, as Tom shouted, "You already started to open up. There is no turning back now."
Heather couldn't bring herself to say it, so Emma blurts out, "She started cheating on you at her bridal party, and that makes me Gerret's half-sister!"
Feeling as if she needed to say anything, Heather said the only thing that she could: "And she has been blackmailing me with that ever since. That's why she scored so low!"
Tom collapsed into his chair and placed his head in his hands. Where had he gone wrong? How could this have been happening all this time? Where did he miss the signs? Was it that abnormal for his daughter to have a new car when he made this much money? But most of all, he wanted to know, "How did this all start?" To his surprise, he actually said that out loud.
Seeing her husband suffer, Heather felt compelled to answer, "Well, it just so happened that my bachelorette party was on the same day as Rich's ex-wife moved out; we both ended up drinking at the same bar. After drinking one too many drinks, my maid of honor convinced me it was wrong to get married without trying one last guy. He just happened to be the only guy in the bar. I thought it would just be a one-night thing, but after I found out I was pregnant, and it might be his, it turned out to be not."
What does Tom do now?
