Chapter 6 by gunde gunde

Try the sporting goods store, or the grocery store first?

To the sporting goods store

Figuring that it’s better to be armed should you run into something, the suffix “thing” feels more natural than “one” when you think about those you’ve been **** to kill so far and what they did, you head first for the mall, doing your best to move quickly but silently as you rush from one abandoned and battered vehicle to the next, stopping every so often to listen and look for any signs of other people.

Eventually, you reach the multitude of doors leading into the mall, and move your feet carefully to avoid stepping on the shattered glass which came as a result of the first looters smashing the glass-doors to get a way inside.

First peaking around the corner without spotting anyone, you then slip into the mall and walk alongside the stores to the right, careful not to walk out in the middle of the mall’s “street”, until you reach the sport goods store, noting that the mannequins in the shop-window have been stripped clean of they gear which they previously sported and step inside it.

It turns out that the store has been thoroughly searched by other looters since your last visit, with the firearms section looking as if it’s been particularly badly hit. Walking through that section, you manage to spot a few cartridges which have been dropped onto the floor. Squatting down to pick up the small brass cylinders, you’re happy to find that they’re of the same caliber as your handgun.

Tucking the five bullets into your pant-pocket, you then head over to the camping section, where you manage to rustle up a few packs of batteries and another flashlight. The flashlight is one of those police-issue ones, and until you find some more purpose-made kind of weapon it’ll suffice as a club.

Acting on divine inspiration, you then go looking for the store’s stockroom, and soon find the door to it, being located in a small space behind a tore-down drape. The door is locked with a large padlock which doesn’t look as if its been broken.
Ecstatic over what might be kept behind that door, and angry at your own stupidity for not checking the door on your last visit here, you’re now determined to find a crowbar or something similar with which you can then open the door.

Exiting the sporting goods shop, holding the flashlight tight in your right hand and your pockets filled with bullets and batteries, you stop once more to consider where to go next.

Food is essential for your and the sisters’ survival, that much you know, and the grocery store is therefore an attractive place to go next.

But on the other hand, Erin and Brittney have very little left in the way of clothing, only the tattered remains of what their **** didn’t managed to tear away from their bodies, and there are several dress shops in the mall. If you’re ever going to leave the basement, it would be very prudent to do so with both of them fully dressed.

What to pick up next, clothes or food?
