Chapter 7 by UnrulyDogboy UnrulyDogboy

Where to?

To class and then swim practice

You headed to your early evening class. It was CmpSci 230 Data Structures and Algorithms. You were having difficulty in the class, so you never missed a lecture. Today's lesson, red/black trees, was shockingly easy.

At one point during the lecture, your professor oversimplified the runtime efficiency of the algorithm he presented. You raised your hand and said that the search would only achieve the desired efficiency on data sets with a bounded domain. Your classmates looked at you like you had two heads. The professor smiled.

"I should have prefaced my comments by saying that we are discussing data structures and their efficiencies in broad terms. However, you are correct; the data set's domain is relevant to runtime performance."

The professor continued with his lecture, but you got the impression that he was teaching mostly to you.

Lecture ended, and your classmates departed in a daze, but you felt great. Before you left, the professor asked you to "hold up."

He was young for a professor, but you couldn't be sure of his age. He was tall and fit, looked like he might be a runner. His hair was long and disheveled with no gray, so probably 30's, but he could be in his early 40's.

"I am sorry, I don't remember your name."

"Adam. Adam Thompson."

"Thank you. I am always embarrassed to ask. I should be better with names. That was an impressive question. Do you have a moment to talk it through with me?"

You told him you had swim practice, but a few minutes wouldn't hurt.

"Swimming, that explains your excellent muscle tone."

He reached out his hand as if he was going to rub your bicep, but then pulled back.

"Myself, I enjoy rowing. I did it in college, and I still do it to keep in shape. We have a top-notch amateur rowing club on campus. You should check it out. Back to your question. If we assumed that the data had an unbounded domain, how do you think that would change the search efficiency?"

You thought for a bit. You really wanted a piece of paper to write down some calculations.

"I can see two possible values depending on the search algorithm implementation."

You went on to explain each of your ideas. The professor nodded his head.

"You are a compSci major? Freshmen? Next year you will select an academic advisor from my department. I would like you to select me. I'd also like you to swing by my office hours this week, so we can further discuss your future in this program."

You said you would be sure to visit and maybe even check out the rowing club. You hurried to swim practice.

Swim practice went as well as expected. In the water, you were unusually fast and energetic. {if trentProgress ==0}You were partnered with Trent, as usual. Typically you struggled to keep up, but this evening, it was easy. You were on Trent's heels, and you weren't even pushing yourself. Just to fuck with Trent, you grabbed his foot twice. It earned you an "accidental" kick to the side of the head, but pissing off Trent was worth it.{else}Trent seemed oddly distant. You suspected your recent interactions had Trent confused and perhaps a bit horny. You were horny too but the opportunity to "mess around" didn't present itself.{endif}

While you were changing out of your Speedo and into your gym clothes, Vadim approached you. He looked pissed.

"Tell your bitch roommate that if he keeps talking trash about me to Coach, I will fuck him up."

Jake has been spreading rumors about Vadim? Interesting information.

"He has been talking shit about me too. I got your back when you decide to shut him up, not that you need it."

Vadim looked you over, nodded, and walked away.

Later in the weight room, you noticed that Trent was positioned too far down on the bench press, preventing him from fully extending on each rep.

"You should move up on the bench."

"What?"

"You are too far down on the bench; you'd get more out of each rep if you slid up and positioned yourself directly under the bar."

{if trentProgress==0}"What do you know, fag."{else}"So you think I should move up. I'm not sure."{endif}

You rolled your eyes, and Trent started his next set. He did two reps and then slid up a few inches. Trent did one rep and then slid up nearly half a foot and finished his set.

"{if trentProgress==0}Maybe next time you don't wait a month to speak up.{endif} You got any other observations?"

Actually, you did. You remembered something you read in a fitness magazine about ordering your routine to maximize the isolation of different muscle groups. You told Trent that the order of his workout was wrong. Trent listened and adapted based on your suggestions. {if trentProgress==0}He barely acknowledged you and did not say thank you. {endif} When you got back to the locker room. Trent tossed you a notebook.

"Write it down."

"Write what?"

"The workout. All my workouts. {if trentProgress}If you are going to be perving on me in the gym, you might as well be useful.{else} You and I are going to be power gym bros. My muscle and your brains; unstoppable!{endif}"

You sat down on the locker room bench and wrote out a three-day gym rotation schedule. You added some suggested dietary changes that Trent should make, it was clear from his skin tone that he was eating too many processed foods.

When you finished, it was late. You skipped taking a shower, tossed the notebook in front of Trent's locker, and headed home.

Practice is over
