Chapter 36 by simmaster
Where does your search take you?
To a goblin camp.
After some wandering, you arrive at a large clearing where a flimsy stockade has been built around most of the open area. There's a rickety wooden watchtower with no roof, really more of a tall platform, where you can see a goblin holding a bow sitting with his legs dangling over the side, presumably bored. This must be the goblin camp Morwyn briefly mentioned earlier.
You walk around to the gate, where another goblin is standing on the wall above. He notices you and leans over the sharpened logs.
"Hey, who are you and whatcha doin' here?"
Time to see how well your Dark Influence works on more intelligent creatures... You bow in an extravagant manner you didn't know you were capable of, and introduce yourself.
"I am a Dark Trickster. I have come to aid you in defending your settlement against heroes."
The goblin raises an eyebrow, looking suspicious. "Why should we need your aid?"
"Well, how goes defending currently? How many heroes have you fought off, and how many have wiped the floor with you?"
He hesitates for a moment, and then spits out "None of your business!"
"Oh, it's not. But it could be. I know it's rough, hence why I've come to propose an alliance. Let's work together. Your strength in numbers combined with my magic, and I'm sure we can turn the tables on any intruders you may face."
The goblin considers it for a while. "Mmmaybeee..."
Then your patience runs out, and you sternly command "Just open the gate."
"Pfft. Fiiine..." the goblin mutters and abides, yelling something to someone down at the ground, and the log gate slides open.
Alright, so you seem to require a bit more persuasion with these guys. Also, you don't remember yourself ever being so well-spoken. Like, sure, it wasn't some silver-tongued masterwork, but you didn't stutter and ramble your way through it. Did the Dark Trickster class give you a Charisma boost? You really need to figure out where those stats are hiding...
You walk inside and have a look around. You are treated to the sight of fur tents and sloppily constructed log huts, as well as a bunch of goblins gathered around a fireplace at the center of the camp, serving as a source of light and comfort in the dark of the night. You approach them, and one by one they turn to look at the bizarre guest.
...Some of them proceed to roll back laughing.
You squint with disapproval, trying to ignore how much that stings. Time to show them you're no laughing matter.
Spook, Spook, Spook, Spook!
You lash out with your arms at the goblins, one after the other, and each of them flash with blue light and illusory skulls before they get up and run around the camp screaming.
The camp becomes silent, aside from the panicked screams, as you cross your arms grumpily. The goblins still at the fire stand up, getting their weapons ready.
You take a bow again. "Good evening to you all. I have come here to assist you against heroes that would seek to attack your home. I hope you will accept my assistance, as I am sure we will all profit from such an agreement."
Some of the goblins start to speak, but quickly quiet down again when one of them shushes them all and approaches you. It's a female, dressed in dark, ragged cloths and animal bones, and holding a wooden staff with a human skull tied to the end. She uses it as a walking stick as she walks towards you, and as she comes closer you can tell she's middle-aged. She also has a rather impressive rack, and her makeshift dress leaves quite a bit of cleavage exposed.
She must be the leader. A shaman, probably. She stops a few feet away from you, about the same height as you.
"You're quite the cocky one, waltzing in here and tossing your magic around willy-nilly." She squints at you. "We could use some help, but we need to be sure you are actually useful. You'll have to pass a test."
What test?
Game Monster
From Creep to Boss
You come into being as a low-level monster, the kind heroes chew through like popcorn. You know the drill, whether you're a player yourself or an artificial intelligence, and you're sick of it. You set out on your own quest: to defeat the heroes at any cost (or at least be an epic boss somewhere down the line).
