Chapter 3

Who came before you?

Tina, the lost Werewolf

You suck in the chilly night air through clenched teeth as you leave the public library. Another day, Another several hours spent studying alone. You can barely remember what was even in those dry, boring old books you wasted your time trying to absorb.

And now you weren’t certain where to go. Certainly not home. If anyone was even back yet they would most likely be wasted. You could do without your parents drunken bickering for at least a couple more hours and would prefer just to avoid it all.

Feeling the cold wind pick up once more you sigh and let the breeze lead you for now. Nothing ever really happens in this dead end town and doubly so on a freezing Wednesday night. Dense clouds still barely able to cover the unusual brightness of the moon tonight.

As you pass by the all night convenience store you could swear you hear an animal huffing somewhere behind you. But when you turn to check, all you find is an empty street. The same repeats. A low growl, a jostled garbage can, a snapped branch. All unanswered for.

Your breath picks up as you walk faster. No. Nothing is there. Nothing is following you. You’re perfectly safe. You are alone after all and if there was something following you you wouldn’t be alone. You barely notice you broken into a sprint as your mind performs the necessary gymnastics to stop yourself from panicking.

You’re unsure how long you run before you reach that dead end alley. You turn back the way you came, and still, no one there. As you back further into the alley you almost miss the soft thump behind you.

“'Ey, Missy, got a light?” Warm breath and a gruff voice assail the back of your neck.

Startled, you spin to face the voice.

And see a mouthful of knives.

Gasping you struggle to sit in your bed and gulp down air as though you forgot how to breath.

You calm down as you see the dorm room around you come into focus in the dark. It’s been months since that night. Months of fear, blood and pain. But you are safe now.

You climb out of the tangle of sheets and grab a glass of water from the bathroom. As you gulp down the glass you catch sight of yourself in the mirror. It has taken you a long time to get used to this. You scan tiredly over your long pointed ears, shaggy as the light grey hair they poke up from, to your now yellow eyes. You blink a few times and continue down. The next thing you notice are your teeth. Fuck you hated them. While not the terrifying sight of your nightmares they are no more inviting. Almost human, just sharper.

You raise your hands and give yourself a few slaps to the face. Enough moping. You’re here.

You’re safe now.
