Chapter 4
by Orpheus
There was suddenly a lot to think about.
Time to ask some questions.
Leon came hard twice against the wall, underneath the magical window where dreams came true. A virgin like him had never, ever seen something like that before. There were plenty of online porn videos claiming to contain ****, but this was provably real, and that made it infinitely hotter. He could hardly believe the ferocity of the passionate exhibition he'd just been audience to. They were on each other like two sex starved animals...
IT FEELS GOOD TO BE ALIVE, BABY!
If what his camera told him was true, this was all thanks to the mysterious Chronicle System. He used a dirty towel to wipe his cum off the wall (yeah, he was that guy) and then flipped on his camera's display screen in search of answers.
Did you enjoy yourself, Leon Marshall?
"Extremely!” he exclaimed. "But sorry, just who the hell are you anyways?"
I am not a person, I am an AI. I am the steward of the Chronicle System.
"So that means you're not some creepy guy sitting in a dark room with his dick out, listening in on everything I say, right...?"
While I am listening in on everything you say, I am not a person. I prefer not to think of myself as creepy, either.
"I don't know how I feel about this whole listening in on me thing... but could I ask you a few questions about all of this? I’m pretty lost, to be honest.”
I am bound by the laws of the System, but I will answer what I can.
"Laws, huh? This System thing must be pretty strict. Well, setting that aside, let's knock the most obvious question out of the way. If this power is as great and mighty as you claim, then why give it to a shit stain like me? Why not somebody who could actually change something?"
People with power, fame, or money, are not worthy inheritors of the Chronicle System.
"A power for the weak and weary, huh? But even then, there are plenty of people worse off than me. I'm lonely, and don't know what to do with my life, but I'm not starving, I’m not homeless. I'm just some guy."
I apologize Leon Marshall, but I cannot give you that answer until your Soul is Rank 9 or higher.
"Wait, what? MY soul? I thought this Soul Link thing was about making bonds with other people."
Soul Links are the ultimate goal of the Chronicle System. However, the System does not provide a free pass. To forge stronger Soul Links, you will undoubtedly need a stronger Soul. Right now, your Soul is weak, and if you stay as you are, the Chronicle System will simply be a parlor trick, and your Links will be fragile and weak.
"I see..." Leon contemplated this. After what he’d seen outside, he admitted that he did basically think of the system as... well, a parlor trick. Something to cheer him up and maybe get his foot in the door for a photography job.
It'd probably be less of a hassle to use it that way, but is that really all he wanted? He'd still be the same old spineless Leon, in the end. Slinking around using petty tricks to get his rocks off. Maybe he could use it to take some real strides for his own wellbeing.
Clown around, or strengthen the Soul?

Soul Links
Bonds to last a lifetime
This story is largely inspired by the Social Link system in newer Persona games. It’s Leon's first year out of high school. He's a loner questioning his passion for photography after a particularly eye opening talk with his teacher. Now he doesn't know what to do with his life. That is, until he discovers the Chronicle System; a mysterious tool that just might turn his life around. What does your heart desire?
