Time for school

“Have a good day, kids,” Belle says as she kisses you and Evelyn on your cheeks.

“Of course, Mom.”

“Thanks, Belle.”

You and Evelyn head out, and start walking.

Evelyn walks ahead and turns mid-stride, walking backwards as she looks at you. “You helped Avery sneak out again yesterday, didn’t you?”

You shrug. “I did.”

She raises an eyebrow. “To see Janice?”

“Didn’t ask, but he probably did.”

Evelyn clucked. “Mom would’ve been furious with you two if she found out.”

You shudder slightly. “I know; I remember what happened last time.”

“Doesn’t it bother you?”

“We make sure to not get caught so she won’t be angry.”

“Not that,” Evelyn rolls her eyes. “I meant Avery seeing Janice. They seem serious, and I know you still have feelings for her.”

A pang of panic wells up in your stomach. “Had,” you quietly say. “I don’t anymore.”

“Liar,” she accuses. You both stop walking. “You still do.”

“I do not,” you glare at her. “I’m over it. Look, Evie, can we not have this conversation right now?”

Evelyn gives you a sympathetic look. “Look, Michael. I know how it feels to love someone who I consider to be my best friend, but not be able to have him reciprocate. I’m not a stranger; you don’t have to lie to me.”

You hold up your glare, but she doesn’t flinch. She just gazes at you with her green eyes.
