What now?

Things are moving quickly

Just a few weeks on, Martin and Ken sat opposite Logan in Martin’s living room. All Logan knew was his dad had told him that they had news. He didn’t know what that meant exactly but it seemed big and he was eager to find out.

Logan shot a questioning glance at his dad but Martin simply gave him a wink and carried on with a discussion about the weather. Logan shrugged it off, but internally he was curious. His stomach rumbled and reminded him that breakfast was happening any minute now.

"So, Logan," Ken started, his tone friendly and inviting, "Your father and I have a bit of an announcement."

Logan blinked a couple of times, his curiosity piqued. "An announcement?" he repeated, a hint of skepticism coloring his voice.

"Yes," Martin chimed in, his eyes sparkling with excitement, "We thought it best to share it with you first."

Ken leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms nonchalantly. "You see, Logan, we've decided to move in together."

Ken explained calmly, his eyes locked on Logan's face. "Into my place. And you're coming with us. We will all be one big happy family. You, me, Martin, and my son, Kyle. I'm sure the two of you will get along great."

"Kyle?" Logan repeated, a puzzled frown marring his handsome features. "Who's Kyle?"

Ken smiled slyly, leaning forward in his chair. "Oh, Kyle," he drawled, his voice dripping with playful teasing, "is my son."

Logan's eyes widened, surprise etched into his youthful visage. "Wait, you mean we’re all supposed to be one big happy family and you didn’t even tell me you had a son, let alone introduce us?"

Logan sputtered, incredulous shock written all over his face. "How did this happen this fast? Dad, you could have told me beforehand."

Martin sighed, looking at Logan apologetically. "You have to understand, Logan," he explained, his voice softer now, "Everything happened so quickly. Ken and I immediately clicked, and it felt right to jump right in. Plus, I didn't want to ruin the magic of the bubble Ken and I have been in with getting bogged down in all the little details with you."

Ken nodded affirmatively, adding, "Trust me, Logan, meeting Kyle will be worth all the surprises.

He's a fascinating guy, a true charmer. You two will hit it off."

A sudden unease washed over Logan, as he mulled over the implications of this unexpected turn of events. He was apprehensive about sharing a roof with Ken's son, yet his father's happiness outweighed Logan's discomfort. Besides, Logan reminded himself, his dad wouldn't do anything to jeopardize Logan's safety or wellbeing.

"Are you sure about this so quickly?" Logan questioned cautiously, scrutinizing Ken's unwavering gaze.

Ken smiled confidently, his eyes twinkling with assurance. "Don't worry, Logan," he assured. "Kyle is an understanding guy. He won't be expecting anything drastic from you right away."

Logan remained unconvinced, yet he refrained from voicing his concerns. Instead, he switched topics abruptly. "What exactly does Kyle do for a living?"

Ken raised an eyebrow, amusement dancing in his eyes. “I’m going to let Kyle and you discuss all that once we get home. We’ve got a bit of a drive and need to get going so the movers can get to work in here.”

Ken said, clapping his hands together loudly, signalling a change in focus, and getting them up off the couch. Logan stood hesitantly, half smiling nervously as he glanced at his dad who looked equally anxious.

Martin put his hand on Logan’s shoulder, and squeezed lightly. “Everything is going to be okay, Logan. I promise.” Logan nodded, swallowing hard. “Yeah, alright.

Let’s just get this show on the road already,” Logan grumbled, his heart pounding wildly in his chest.

The three of them piled into Ken's SUV, the engine purring like a tame tiger as Martin got in the drivers seat, Ken beside him and Logan slumped into the back. "Ok let’s go, our new home awaits." Martin announced excitedly as he pulled out of their driveway for the last time.

As the car sped down the highway, Logan stared blankly out the window, his thoughts racing ahead.

He couldn't shake off the uneasy feeling that something wasn't quite right, but he pushed aside his doubts, trusting that his father knew best.

The journey was long but Ken entertained them with anecdotes about his life, often recounting fond memories of Kyle growing up. Logan could sense that his dad was truly smitten with Ken, and his feelings of unease dissipated somewhat.

"So, Logan," Ken prodded as they approached Ken's estate, "Tell us about yourself. What hobbies do you enjoy?"

Logan shifted uncomfortably in his seat, suddenly shy. "Ah, just the usual stuff, you know," he mumbled, searching for the right words.

"I enjoy partying, traveling, and making friends."

Ken chuckled, his eyes crinkling with amusement. "That sounds like a lot of fun, Logan. I'm sure Kyle will appreciate that."

Logan blushed, his cheeks reddening under the scrutiny of Ken's gaze. "Yeah, I mean, I also work part-time at an overpriced trendy coffee shop," he added, his voice trailing off.

"A coffee shop?" Ken exclaimed, his interest piqued. "That's awesome! I bet you've been well trained in service then." Ken added his voice dripping in innuendo which Martin picked up on but Logan didn’t.

“Well, I’ve learned to respect people’s preferences and needs,” Logan offered tentatively, raising an eyebrow curiously.

Ken laughed heartily, his eyes sparkling. “I’m sure you've learned a lot during your time working at the coffee shop,” he teased “you know, learning to cater to the unique tastes of every customer."

Logan smiled sheepishly, "Well, yeah, I guess."

They shared a laugh, and a sense of camaraderie developed in the confined space of the vehicle.

Logan noticed that Ken's presence seemed to lighten the mood, bringing a smile to his father's face that he hadn't seen in ages. As they neared Ken's estate, Logan couldn't help but feel a mix of anticipation and trepidation. He wondered what kind of person Kyle would be, and whether he would accept Logan into his newfound family.

Suddenly, they rounded a curve, and Ken's sprawling mansion came into view. Logan gasped in awe, his jaw dropping at the sight of the grandeur before him.

Time to explore?
