Chapter 12

What do the goblins want?
They want to join you!
The group in front of you is a sorry lot. Eleven goblins including the chieftess stand before you, carrying almost nothing but their weapons and the clothes on their backs. Several of them are sporting nasty cuts, scrapes, and in one case one of the smaller goblins appears to have had an arm bitten clean off. The chieftess stands at the front of the ragtag group and greets you in her usual incoherent way.
"Oh reddest of demons! Alivest of guys! Gobbo clan want join you clan!"
You frown and adopt your usual goblin-commanding tone. "Why do you wish to join me, friends?"
"You has nice warm tower and fun imps and big fires and be nice red guy!"
"Right, but what happened to the cave?"
"Zigrag—he sneaky gobbo—come back with shiny red crystal. Claimer crystal. He say red guy and scary fang lady and gobbo friends die to big metal person but he get shiny crystal. But he say since he get shiny crystal he boss now. Many gobbos join Zigrag, no like live in stinky cave and die to big humans. We not join Zigrag, he sneaky and nasty and we think he lie. But Zigrag use shiny and call himself Zigrag, and because he have shiny and can make hut and have name more gobbos join. We no like Zigrag but he say we join or we go, so we go. Zigrag no like go, he stab, but other gobbos no want stab so most of us gobbo run away, but great sky fire go out and sky get dark and scary fangy lion bird attack gobbos. Now we here but very sad, but very happy to see Zigrag lie and red guy still alive demon!"
Your head hurts just trying to parse their rambling, excited, broken speech, but you aren't about to say no to a whole host of underlings showing up on your doorstep on the eve of a battle.
"Very well, you may join me, but you must swear allegiance to me and provide for yourselves if you do so. And I warn you, you might not be able to leave once you do."
"Yes! Join red guy! Red guy strong, kill metal giant!"
Well, it seems that settles it. Suddenly you have a flash of inspiration. Motioning for the goblins to follow you, you walk down to the altar room, ducking a few stray firebolts from the imps as you go. The goblins for their part seem wowed by your "impressive" ruined tower—evidently their standards are calibrated to living outdoors and damp caves—and hoot and dance in happiness when seeing the underground area, with many exclamations of "red guy" and similar names for you. You try to tell them your name, but immediately regret it as you are declared "Zaza, most guyest of reds." Sliding along beside you, Tlax gives off a hiss that sounds far too much like a chuckle for your tastes. You glare at her, earning what you could swear was a smirk for your troubles.
After several detours, your frustratingly distracted party finally makes their way to the altar, just two rooms from where they entered. Noting that you're still at 12 underlings and therefore that the goblins must not have registered as part of your dungeon yet, you demand that they swear fealty to you at the altar.
The chieftess goes first, placing her crude spear upon the altar and claiming to even be willing to do "the biggest of dies for the reddest of guys." Suddenly, you feel a rush of energy as she's engulfed in flames. The goblins hiss and snarl and brandish their weapons at you, but the flames quickly subside to reveal a reddish figure, still distinctly the chieftess, and yet not. Her features are slightly more androgynous, her limbs are lankier, her fanged mouth curves upwards in a slight grin, her eyes flicker with small flames, and tiny horns poke from her forehead. She hoots, and, after exclaiming entirely too much about how "great red guy make me red guy," you decide that she's going to need a name if she sticks around, and settle on Rishukan. The remaining goblins, suddenly eager to become "red guys" themselves, place their weapons on the altar one at a time, and soon you're left with 11 new underlings. Their levels appear to be unchanged—3 for Rishukan and 2 for the others—but their ascension (descension?) to "fallen ones" has left them with significantly improved physical capabilities and a resistance to fire. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have any impact on their intelligence. True to their old selves, they seem to be decent in combat but far worse than your abishai in other respects.
You order your new minions to start constructing a small camp around the outside of the tower, both to keep them busy and get them out of earshot. Tlax coils up on a small rug in your room and you collapse in your bed for a well-deserved rest. You awake the next day to the loud blare of a trumpet and an expected popup.
World Bounty: Enileve's Wrath (Day 1 of 4)
A boss monster recently razed the Monastery of Enileve at Bearglade Crossing. Enileve demands justice for this atrocity. Slay Azazel the Imp and his minions!
Living monsters: 29/29
Day 1 of 4
Monsters killed will drop additional coins and crafting materials.
Azazel will drop a wand of firebolts when killed.
(Rewards will change each day)
Well, that isn't so bad. Given how little your firebolts do compared to any adventurers who are actually a threat to you, you relax and get back to ordering your minions around. No doubt a few adventurers will at least start making their way here, but you can't imagine anyone is in a rush. The biggest problem is now everyone in the area will no doubt keep an eye on the rewards, and the moment they're worth hiking up Imporne you're going to be playing host to entirely too many guests.
You head upstairs to see that your fallen ones have constructed a makeshift camp beside the tower, which looks somewhat like a goblin camp but with a bit more stone and even more things on fire. Given you designed your layout with the long-term in mind, this leaves you in a bit of an awkward spot: your underlings' living quarters and your own respawn point are essentially located right next to your front door. With that, you make it a priority to come up with at least passable temporary defences, eventually settling on placing a rough iron gate blocking the thin path where it turns the corner just at the edge of your dungeon's current extents, and place an unlocked wooden door outside it which leads down some stairs and to a passage which connects to your hallways. As a final touch you scatter a few basic fire traps with what resources and time you have left. Hopefully most adventurers won't bother forcing their way through the gate when an easier route is right in front of them. In any case, it'll have to do: by the time everything is built the sun is already setting again, and you settle into bed to mark the end of your least eventful day since the patch.
World Bounty: Enileve's Wrath (Day 2 of 4)
Living monsters: 29/29
Monsters killed will grant additional experience.
Azazel will drop a unique fire spellbook when killed, suitable for characters up to level 10.
Bonus (No clears on day 1): Day 1 rewards also apply.
(Rewards will change each day)
Well, it could be worse. The level cap on the spellbook means you're unlikely to see anyone too powerful just yet, but it'd be surprising if the new rewards plus the bonus rewards didn't draw a fair number of low-level adventurers to your doorstep. You hop out of bed and start giving last-minute orders, directing most of your forces to defend various parts of the underground with guerilla tactics while two imps are assigned to messenger duty, one at each entrance. You're just about to relax and wait for arrivals when a familiar "booooooooooooooooooooooooooooss!" from the underground imp has you jump back out of bed and get moving.
Who makes up the first wave?
