They head home

Chapter 89 by TalesInTemptation TalesInTemptation

They eventually walked out into the night, the air cooler and faintly scented with the lake. Natalie slipped her keys from her purse while Aiden held the door for her. The drive home started quietly, windows cracked just enough for the breeze and the radio playing low, as the headlights painted the empty road ahead.

Aiden sat angled toward her one arm resting against the console. After a few miles, his fingers brushed the edge of her thigh, light enough that it could have been an accident. When she didn’t pull away, his hand came to rest fully on her thigh through the fabric of her slacks.

Natalie’s eyes stayed on the road, but she tilted her leg slightly toward him, the smallest motion saying what words didn’t need to.

For a while, neither spoke. His thumb began to move in slow, aimless circles, caressing her through the fabric. When his hand drifted higher, testing, her pulse gave a little jump. She let it happen until his fingers inched near the inner seam of her pants.

Then she laid her own hand over his, stilling it. “That’s far enough,” she said quietly, though the words carried no edge.

Aiden froze. “Sorry, I-”

“It’s fine,” she interrupted softly, still resting her palm over his. She glanced at him long enough to smile before returning her attention to the road.

Her hand stayed there for another few seconds, letting him know she wasn’t bothered, but that perhaps this was a boundary.

When she finally lifted her hand again, his stayed where she’d stopped it, content to rest on her thigh. Neither spoke the rest of the way home, but they could both feel the heat building where his hand sat.

She pulled into the lot, parking in her covered spot. Neither of them had moved much since the drive started, and his hand was still resting where it had been, her leg angled slightly toward him.

When she shifted into park and turned off the engine, the quiet was immediate. The dash lights dimmed, and for a second, they just sat there, both aware of how close they were.

Aiden looked over with a grin that was equal parts nervous and bold. “So… you gonna invite me inside?”

Natalie turned her head slowly, giving him a look of amusement, but her brow pinched together at his question. “Wow,” she said, shaking her head. “You really don’t know when to stop, do you?”

“Can’t help it,” he said, smiling. “Seems to have gotten me to this point with you.”

She let out a small laugh, more of a sigh than anything. “You’re lucky you’re packing something serious down there, because I honestly don’t know if I’ll be able to put up with the bad jokes for the long run.”

His grin widened. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”

“Take it however you want,” she said, grabbing her purse. “Just don’t let it go to your head.”

“Too late,” he quipped, giving her thigh a quick squeeze before letting go and pushing his door open.

She rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop watching him. She checked out his cute, tight butt as he climbed out. She had the uneasy feeling that the line between playful and something else entirely was getting thinner by the minute. And she wasn’t sure she minded.

Giving herself a second before opening her own door, she used the time to take a slow breath and gather what little sense of composure she had left. By the time she stepped out, Aiden was on the other side of the car, hands in his pockets, waiting for her to come around.

“Thanks for dinner,” he said.

“Of course,” she replied, locking the car. “And thanks for talking about what this is.”

“Right. That too.” He fell into step beside her as they started toward the building. The night was quiet with just the sound of traffic on the main road outside the community.

When they reached the stairs, he slowed. “So,” he said carefully, “am I staying out of your way tonight, or…?”

She looked over, reading the mix of longing and restraint on his face. “You’re not in my way.”

That was all it took to put the smile back on his lips. They climbed the stairs in silence. She unlocked the door, flicked on the light, and set her purse on the counter.

Aiden toed off his shoes, unsure of what came next, and waiting for a cue. Natalie turned toward him. Her expression was a bit confused too. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to say – or stop.

“You want a drink?” she finally asked, sounding casual yet thinking about his hand on her thigh the entire drive home.

“Sure,” he said, stepping toward the kitchen island. “Whatever you’re having.”

She went to the fridge, pulling out two bottles of water. When she handed him one, their fingers brushed, and neither moved for a second.

It was a small touch, nothing dramatic, but it carried all the charged energy from the night. The same electricity. The same promise that sooner or later, one of them was going to stop pretending this wasn’t inevitable.

Natalie broke eye contact first, opening her bottle and taking a sip. “TV?” she offered.

“Yeah,” he said, clearing his throat. “TV sounds good.”

They both knew that wasn’t what either of them was really thinking about. Aiden dropped onto the couch, stretching an arm along the backrest as he grabbed the remote.

“You pick,” he said, flipping through the streaming apps without much interest. “Something light, no true crime or weird dating shows this time.”

“If you have such strong feelings about it, then you pick,” Natalie called from down the hall. Her voice was muffled as she disappeared into her room.
