Chapter 5 by CandidBandit CandidBandit

What's next?

They call me World Builder

"Hey, Manuel?" I asked.

Yes?

"When you said that I could create worlds, did you mean I could make more than one?" I inquired.

That is correct.

"But what happens to the previous worlds?" I was wondering if each new world replaced to old one.

As long as they remain in your memory they can always be revisited.

Oh good. So, they don't get erased. If I were to think of this in terms of games again, it would be like ejecting one game disc for another but having my save data stored in a hard drive. That hard drive being my head.

That was a relief because after making this world I was in now, the one identical to my world, I knew I would definitely want to revisit. And tinker around with it. But for now I wanted to test out another world.

Taking a seat at one of the tables in the food court, I closed my eyes. I began running through all the possible worlds I could make. After thinking for a bit I decided that I wanted to make two different types of worlds for the time being. Besides the one I had now, obviously.

Right now I had a modern day setting with this one. I also wanted a fantasy type setting too. One with a very medieval vibe thing going. A very Tolkien-esque world. Humans, Elves, maybe not dwarves cause beards....

The other world I was thinking of was going to be very futuristic. I was thinking along the lines of Star wars, Star trek or Mass effect. Of course, I admit, I was only thinking of all the alien girls from those franchises.

So in that sense it wasn't just a world but rather a galaxy of worlds. I wondered if I could do that. "Manuel, can I make a galaxy for one of my 'Worlds'?"

That is possible.

"Nice. Another question. Am I going to get brain damage from all of this?" A galaxy of worlds sounds like a lot of data to store.

You will not be damaged by creating worlds. The Dreamworld will take most of the work of building each world. You need only remember the world as you envisioned it.

Ooooh, okay. So, my brain wasn't the hard drive then. If anything my brain was more like the RAM. Maybe. I don't really know. I never really understood computers but I remembered someone telling me about RAM.

Anyway. So, I didn't have to worry about my worlds being erased and I wasn't going to become a vegetable. This power seemed to only have benefits.

Okay back to world building. Fantasy first. Umm, lets see, what kind of fantasy world should I make?

It would need kingdoms. Swords too. And magic, definitely magic. Elves are a given. Maybe some other races too but I'll think of those later. What about large scale? How many continents? Should it look similar to Earth? Similar might be better, for my memory at least. But not too similar. Lets go for four main continents. And a couple sub-continents. Some islands dotted around the place too. But because it's a fantasy world, the technology won't be advanced enough for them to have explored much more than their own nations. Two of the continents will be close to each other which will lead to some contact between them. One continent will be across an ocean to the west, similar to America. The fourth continent will be south-east on the world map, again it will be in a similar position to Australia but bigger. The first two continents will be more center, similar to Africa and Eurasia. There'll be a sub-continent in the ocean roughly between those two but more to the east and south of them. Kind of like India but as if it wasn't connected to any other land. Oh, and a south pole land mass.

After giving that some thought I wanted some kind of visual representation of what I'd thought up. After looking at the table in front of me I got an idea. I tried willing to existence a world map superimposed onto the surface of my table. I looked down and there it was. Blue for the oceans and green for land.

Looking at it I saw that it was actually pretty similar to Earth but with different shapes to each land mass. I mentally reshaped bits here and there. Added islands around coastal areas and out to sea. I added different colors to the lands to represent different terrain like grasslands, forests, deserts, rocky areas and other likely places you'd find on an Earth like planet. Mountains too. Needed mountains. But I couldn't really tell on this table what was flat and what was elevated so I willed the table to change shape and to show me the topography of my new fantasy world. The oceans looked wavy but seemed level. The land was raised from being flat to rising above sea level just slightly.

Looking up a moment from my work I looked again at the people around me. They weren't giving my odd looking table any weird looks. I smiled and looked back down, trying to decide on where my mountains should be.

After some minutes of rearranging landscapes I decided I was pleased at what I made. My Atlas/table was quite jagged and rough where the peaks of mountain ranges pointed up but gently sloped down towards hills and forests, grasslands and lakes. There were rivers coming down from the slopes too. Some rivers also came in from the sea. There was also snow capped peaks and colder looking climates in the northern parts of the map. There were deserts too the further towards the equator you went.

Now, the people. There were going to be humans, as there always were. I'll have them be very similar to the races that exist on Earth. They'll make medieval towns, villages and cities. Wear fashion suitable for the times. Armor, swords, bows and arrows, horse-riding, the whole shebang. All that plus people that practice magic. They'll have schools for students of said magic and no pointy hats. I never liked the pointy hats. Those that use magic will be able to harness the powers of nature and it's elements. The stronger you are in the use of magic, the more elements you can use. And the more you can do with each element.

While I was thinking about the inhabitants of my fantasy world I willed for a miniature version of a human to stand on a section of the table. It was a male human who wore a dark green tunic and trousers with a darker green cloak over his shoulders. He had dark hair and green eyes. A female counterpart appeared next to him in similar attire. She had brown hair and grey eyes. I then had them stand on the northern continent on the western coastline. They were small enough that they didn't take up too much space on my map. I then thought up a couple variations of humans and placed them close to the first two. One of the new ones was a blonde male, blue-eyed and tall. The other one was a redheaded woman who also had green eyes like the first man. She, however, was shorter than the others and was pale with freckles.

After that I made other miniature versions of humans around the map with features that corresponded with the land they would be living on. There were darker skinned humans along the equator and people almost resembling those of middle-eastern and Asian decent in the eastern part of the northern continent. There was also some copper skinned people on the northern edge of the African-like continent and some also on the western continent. I also wanted for there to be little to no sexism in this world. I wanted to see women in many different occupations. A girl in armor could be sexy too.

I think that was all for the humans. Now for the Elves. I deliberately left a lot of space open so I could include other races. I put some Elves on the table and shaped them to be mostly tall with light colored hair and fair skin. They had pointed ears and sharp beautiful features. Their clothes were also elegant and far beyond what humans could make. I then made variations of them too. I wanted there to be dark Elves. Elves with darker skin and hair. While the fair skinned ones would live in forests and places rich in nature their dark counterparts would live in more rocky and unforgiving places in both middle continents. The Elves would also have an average life span of nine hundred years, give or take.

I then began adding other races that I had come across in fantasy literature and old myths. The only differences would be that they would be a lot more attractive than they were depicted in most other forms of media. Orcs, for example, would have very fine lady Orcs. This was going to be a world were I could have as much sex as I wanted, remember?

I made it so that all females of these races would be bang-able. Heck, even some of the mythological monsters like mermaids and sirens, harpies and lamia would be sexy as hell. Plus, they would be more concerned with finding a mate than terrorizing any villagers.

With all the miniature figurines on the map, I wanted them to make all their habitations according to the land around them. I imagined all of them where they were and willed them to gravitate to where they would naturally set up there homes. I also willed the number of figurines to multiply in representation of population. Then I fast forwarded two thousand years.

I watched as the figurines blurred across the table and the map. Some moved apart, some stayed mostly where they were. Their numbers increased and decreased in small waves. Some gathered and pushed against other groups in what I thought was war because there was a big decrease in population when that happened. After that I willed for the figurines to want peace above all else. The wars decreased over the years, not going away entirely but still fading.

At the two thousand year mark they all came to a stand still.

I looked at my map again and saw what looked to be lots of groupings of figurines dotting the map. Large groups meant cities, smaller groups meant villages and towns. There even seemed to be tiny settlements here and there. Some had even made their way halfway up some mountains. That was surprising. Some islands were also populated.

And the variety. Some of the races were mixing with others nicely. Some didn't look as inviting as others. Unsurprisingly most of these were Elves and some humans.

Overall I was happy with what I had so I left it at that. I then willed the Dreamworld to turn my map into a book containing the map and details on what I made plus the detailed history of that two thousand year gap.

The map on the table then flattened itself again. It then gained the texture of paper and folded in on itself. I heard the sound of flipping pages and material wrapping around something. When that was done, what was left was a large book with dark green leather for the covers. I took it and opened it up to see a hand written account of the world of Ard Terras.

"Ooooh! This is cool!" It looked so legit, this book. Like I was actually holding some book from the middle ages. Flipping through the pages I saw chapters about the histories of each people. There was more than one map too. Some were a zoomed in view of various countries and important cities. There were illustrations of people and objects and plants- and holy crap this is cool!

I was getting so excited I couldn't wait any longer. I stood up from the table (which was back to normal), and closed my eyes again. I tried concentrating on the book in my hands and it's contents. I imagined being somewhere on the northern continent. Somewhere foresty and where I could walk to a nearby town.

With my eyes closed I felt a rush of cool air and opened my eyes. For a moment I just stood there not daring to breathe.

I was standing in the middle of a clearing surrounded by trees. Next to me was a large boulder, half of it was depressed into the ground while one end pointed off into the trees. The sun was streaming through gaps in the foliage at an angle.

When I decided to breathe again I could smell the scents of dirt and the early morning smells of a forest waking up. I could hear chirping and birdsong too.

Everything was so still and peaceful. Except for that cool air. It kept blowing past me, leaving me with a slight chill.

Looking down at my clothes I realized I was still wearing my modern 'Stay calm' t-shirt and jeans. I tried changing them to something more appropriate. Something resembling the tunic, trousers, boots and cloak of the first male figurine I made replaced what I was wearing. Immediately I felt less cold. The cloak cut the chill nicely.

Realizing that I was still holding the History book, I thought of a suitable pack to carry over my shoulder. A dark green bag appeared on the ground in front of me. I picked it up and brushed some dead leaves off of it. Putting the book in the pack I then slung it over my shoulder, then I pulled one leather belt over my chest and under my opposite arm to tie it to a loop on the pack so it would stay in place. Once I did that I pulled my cloak over it. The pack hung around the small of my back snugly.

Now, seeing as I was ready, I looked around trying to decide on a direction to take when I noticed a trail of white smoke rising lazily into the air. I guess that's where I'm going. I smiled, feeling a bit giddy at what I'll find once I get out of these woods.

"Hey, Manuel. You ready for some fun?" I asked my favorite buddy in the whole wide world.

I suppose I am.

I couldn't help but laugh at his lack of enthusiasm.

What will I find?

More fun
