Chapter 77 by Doobler Doobler

Will a Digital Gate not open?

They’re not so lucky.

Once the button was finished being pressed, the smart TV against the wall switched on, an odd symbol on the screen of the UI. “Ah, right. It’s basically a computer. Had to connect the Wi-Fi and everything.” Leonard thought as he was pulled from the couch towards the screen, the various women around him all getting sucked inside too.

With a groan, Leonard woke up. His head was killing him, and when he rubbed his temples he noticed something on his head that wasn’t there before.

“… goggles?” he asked, before also checking himself fully. Rather than the plain t-shirt and sweatpants he’d been wearing, now he had some cargo shorts and a different t-shirt with a puffy vest. Not to mention some fingerless gloves and a very colorful pair of sneakers.

“Guess it’s better than being naked…” he muttered, before hearing a similar groaning to his own on the ground next to him. Also prone (or more accurately supine) on the ground lay Erica. She had gotten a wardrobe upgrade too, though not quite the same clothing. In her case she had on short shorts, boots, and sweatbands, though still a t-shirt (one that was relatively snug). She also had her hair done in her usual ponytail but just with a vibrantly-colored scrunchie rather than the plain black hair tie she normally had.

Erica’s eyes blinked open, and once she was fully awoken she asked “… how long was I out? W-Where are we…?” while looking around and at her new clothes.

“The Digital World. Not the one I knew, though…” a familiar voice answered. Angewomon sat beside the two of them, back to her full Digimon appearance with the angel wings and metal mask. “The landscape isn’t familiar to me at all…”

Taking stock of their surroundings, Lenny and Erica saw a sleek and smooth city around them. It was colored primarily black with glowing red details, not quite circuits. They were more like a purely aesthetic choice, a fairly necessary one considering how monochrome the surroundings would’ve been otherwise.

The buildings looked like they were made of cubic blocks, all right angles with no curves. “This doesn’t really make me think of any locales I’ve seen from a Digimon show before now… Granted, I’m not exactly a superfan, but still…” Leonard commented, staring up at the starless black sky above.

As she looked over the glowing lines covering the buildings, Erica said “… call me crazy, but this place reminds me of…” before pausing as the trio came across some kind of open city square. On the largest central building of the square was a clear “N” that pulsed with a palpable power. “… Netflix.”

Suddenly, a cluster of floating black cubes flew over, surrounding the three of them. The cube closest to Leonard began vibrating as a grating sound reverberated from its surface. “ATTENTION, LIFEFORMS. PROVIDE PROPER CREDENTIALS OR BE FORCEFULLY EJECTED TO THE VOID. YOU HAVE FIVE SECONDS TO COMPLY.

At this moment, Leonard remembered he didn’t actually have a Netflix account, despite the app being available on his smart TV.

“Uh…” he gulped, before the Digimon next to him readied herself. A bow formed on her right arm and with her left she drew an arrow of light, firing it at part of the gaggle of blocks threatening them.

Holy Arrow!

A few shattered into misshapen chunks, while some got away with gnarly cracks on their previously smooth surfaces. Either way, her attack broke open a path through the cubes, and immediately Lenny, Erica, and Angewomon dashed to escape.

Lenny’s roommate was remarkably fast, and he himself had enough trouble keeping up that Angewomon hung him over her shoulder as she soared next to Erica, managing to keep pace with her flight.

As the cluster of remaining black blocks pursued, Leonard clenched his left hand, calling out “By This Command Seal I Order You: Take out all those things chasing us!” as his Command Seals glowed red through his fingerless gloves.

At once Erica nodded, and as she turned to face down the horde her eyes took on a crimson shine.

About a half-hour later and Erica had demolished whatever had threatened them, and as the three sat down to rest surrounded by broken pieces she asked “So, we’re inside your TV now, right? I think that’s a fair judgement to make.”

Lenny nodded, saying “Yeah, I think so. Couldn’t get Netflix out of the list of apps, and since there’s a dedicated button for it on the remote it’s probably just a default.” as he looked around, squinting at the pitch black sky and cyberpunk cubic architecture around them. “It’s a little worrying that everything looks like Tron here though, what if we get hungry?”

Angewomon nodded “Good point. I’ll try and scout around, see if there’s more than featureless buildings in this place. I should be able to handle another group by myself, so you two stay here and rest up.” before taking off with her angel wings and leaving Leonard and Erica.

“… you know what would be nice, right about now?” Erica sighed.

Lenny groaned “The Yu-Gi-Oh cards…”

“Exactly! Can you maybe do something to bring them to you? Or better yet, some kind of way to exit?” she asked, scooting the chunk she was sitting on like a chair closer to his chair-chunk.

The diminutive man could only shake his head though, saying “The app’s still not very navigable. Doing the other menu just has a greyed-out option, I think an exit would be a different menu altogether.” as he held up the Digivice to illustrate his point. “Everyone else is still unaccounted for anyways, we can’t just leave them behind. What if they’re stuck in this hellscape too? Or in a different one?”

Erica groaned “I know that, I just was hoping we could pop out really quick to get all the tools from our ‘arsenal’. A Pot of Greed makes for a passable missile, remember?” before her eyes drifted to Leonard’s left hand.

Pulling the fingerless gloves off, the two remaining Command Seals were revealed, and she asked “Could you use these, maybe? I felt way stronger back when you ordered me to take out the flying blocks, could you order me to exit to the real world so I can grab everything, then call me back?”

Leonard grimaced. “That’d use up every Seal I have, and until the date changes I won’t get another one. I don’t think it’s smart for us to blow all our stock in less than an hour. We might need them in the near future.” he replied, clearly hesitant. He raised a good point, of course.

“We have to do something though, what if we’re stuck in here, and there isn’t a way outside otherwise?” Erica pointed out, raising a good point herself.

Honestly, there didn’t seem to be any good options for the pair, soon to be trio once Angewomon gets back.

Can they find a way forward?
