Chapter 42 by ThomasMoro

What happens next?

There's something happening here...

Just then the raven-haired woman who called herself Winona entered the room.

"What's taking so long?" asked Winona. "We just got a whole bunch of visitors downstairs and the Master wants us to introduce them to -- Wait a minute! Where the hell did she get that?"

"She says I gave it to her," said Sarah, pointing to the crucifix that Jane Harker held in her hand.

"Why the hell did you do that?" asked Winona.

"I didn't do that," said Sarah. "She just thinks I did."

"Well, that was pretty foolish of you," said Winona. "Did you give her the pointed stick as well?"

"Of course not," said Sarah. "Any more than I gave her the crucifix."

"Well, why does she think you gave her the crucifix if you didn't give it to her?" asked Winona.

"How should I know?" asked Sarah.

"Well, however she got it, you should have known better than to let her keep it," said Winona.

"I do know better," said Sarah. "But it does no good. I keep trying to get her to throw those two items away but she refuses to do so."

"Oh, really?" asked Winona. "How hard have you been trying?"

"Hard enough to want to see you take over for a change," said Sarah.

"Oh, well," said Winona. "You girl. Throw away that cross."

"No," said Jane.

"In that case, throw away that stick," said Winona.

"Throw away... the stick?" asked Jane.

"That's right," said Winona. "Throw away the stick."

"I prefer not to," said Jane.

"Oh, for Pete's -- Okay, then give me the stick," said Winona.

"Give you the stick?" asked Jane.

"That's right," said Winona, gazing at Jane with open arms. "Give me the stick."

"Are you sure?" asked Jane.

"Of course I'm sure," said Winona. "Now give me the stick."

"Give you the stick?" asked Jane.

"Yes, give me the stick," said Winona.

"Very well," said Jane. "Since you asked for it..."

The next thing Sarah knew, Winona was screaming and fading into a pile of dust as she was pierced by the pointed stick that Jane had been holding. At that point, Jane instantly dropped the pointed stick and kicked it over to Sarah but Sarah did not even try to pick it up. Instead Sarah turned and hastily exited the room.

As Jane watched her leave, she could not help thinking that she had finally found out how the darn pointed stick worked. And judging from Sarah's reaction, it obviously worked better for people like Jane than for people like Sarah.
