Chapter 22
by wixxy
Getting out of dodge.
There's a problem.
You're almost at the main lobby area at the front of the station when you urgently reach back to halt Todd. What was that sound? Gesturing to him to keep his head down, you creep forward towards the final open door, preparing to peek around the corner to try to figure out what is out there. Fortunately, the interior of the building is pretty dark due to the power being long gone, with only flashes of natural light from windows that look onto the lightwell in the middle. The building was designed primarily for security, so pleasant features like skylights had not been high on the priority list. In any case, it means that you can be confident that you won't be seen as long as you are careful.
Beyond the large plate glass doors are five people, dishevelled and ****-looking. They are a range of ages, mostly early twenties with two significantly older. One of them, a tall and slim man who looks to be stooping, perhaps from a spinal injury, appears to be inspecting the damage to the security glass that you noticed on your way in. There are three women and two men in the group, and while each of them carries a bat, ax, or other bludgeoning instrument, none of them appear to be armed with anything with more reach or firepower. Other than their rudimentary weapons, the group is clad in mismatched pieces of torn and damaged clothing, with the occasional piece of obviously-prized technical gear, such as an incongruous high-end waterproof jacket. They each carry a pack, all of which look to be pretty light on supplies.
The four people not inspecting the door seem to be arguing. The occasional attempt by the man at the front to keep them quiet seems to be ignored, and you can hear muffled but raised voices through the thick glass.
As you make your way carefully back to Todd, your mind works over the possibilities.
First of all, they don't seem particularly dangerous. The group looked like it's seen hard times, but other than an expected level of jitteriness they didn't look to be unhinged or unfriendly. That said, five people can easily overpower two, especially when one of the two is carrying a heavy load. There's also no certainty that this is all of the group. It doesn't seem like their discipline is good enough to expect to find a rearguard somewhere, but that's not an assumption you like to make.
Second, do they know you're here? Were they watching the station like you, just more patiently, and did they witness your privileged access with the keys? It seemed like the guy at the window was trying to assess the damaged glass, perhaps looking to see if they can break it... but possibly also trying to figure out how someone got inside. If they did see you approach, there's no reason why they'd expect you to have the keys, so it could be that they think you've achieved some kind of trick.
It's not an impossible notion to consider that it might be worthwhile offering to team up with these people. If you can gauge their motivations, you could return to the armory and equip a now-sizable group and suddenly become comparatively very secure. It could be useful to get some more news of the outside world, and having more people to watch your backs is certainly appealing. The fact that the group is mostly women reassures you a little, as even though you have no reason to trust them just for that, it doesn't seem likely they could be a Mad Max style wasteland sex slaving gang.
However it also seems unwise to add another five mouths to feed to your many challenges. Even if they are initially friendly, can you trust them to stay that way? If you dole out weapons like a post-apocalyptic Santa, you could very easily find yourself outsmarted and overpowered in a flash. The main guy, who seemed to be sort of a boss to the group, didn't look too smart, and he might see you as a threat to his leadership.
And, of course, maybe they are dangerous and all they are interested in is taking whatever they can from you.
You fill Todd in on the situation. His brows crease with worry at the news. You summarise your thoughts about what to do, but he just shrugs and looks at you with a face that says 'you're the boss.'
You're the boss. What are you going to do?
