The work isn't what you thought

You go about the rest of the day in your new job. However, it's not long before you realize that being the editor of a newspaper is not as exciting as you thought it would be. Most of your day is occupied by meetings. There are pitch meetings, budget meetings, job interviews, and more pitch meetings. Apart from your exhilarating start to the day, by mid-afternoon you're already dreading your decision. Even worse, if Laura hadn't stuck around to pretty much do your job, you might actually have to try to work hard.

You finally get a few minutes to yourself when Amanda informs you that a meeting with a candidate running for mayor has been postponed, and you retreat to your office and slam the door shut, ignoring what you had said earlier about an open door policy.

As you sit behind Laura's old desk and stare at the pile of paperwork on it, you shake your head. You tap the hidden earpiece in your ear twice. Immediately, you hear the sound of running water.

"Guten tag!" Heidi's cheery voice sounds in your ear.

"Hey Heidi. Where are you? I can hear the water."

"Oh, just taking a shower. I have to get ready for a function tonight. Some benefit for kids. The usual. How are you? Are you liking the new job?"

You don't answer, unsure if you should be honest with her. You have nothing to lose but you don't want the former supermodel to think you're whiny.

"John? That bad huh?" Heidi says. She sounds concerned.

"Ha. Yeah... I... I don't know if I'm cut out for this. It's a lot more glamorous in the movies for sure."

"Well, you don't have to keep doing it. Maybe someone else can do the job?"

"I did hire Laura as the assistant editor-"

"Perfect! Just let her do the work while you retain the title. If you haven't changed your mind in... say a week, we'll find something else official for you."

"Won't it look bad for me?" you ask, thinking about the optics of being made the editor and then suddenly not having the job anymore.

"Oh, I wouldn't worry about that. The Organization has some of the best marketing firms on our payroll. Trust me, they can spin anything. Hey, don't sound so down. What are you doing tonight? I know Gigi's not going to be back for a few days. You want to come to this benefit with me?"

"As your plus 1?"

"No, my husband's going with me. Technically, I'm going with him, but we know who wears the pants in this relationship. Come on, just come. I'll text you the details," Heidi insists and you agree since you'll need a drink at the end of this long day anyway.
