The view from the stage

Abbie walked up onto the stage, and as she turned back to face Greg, realized that with the stage lights on, she couldn't really see him very well. She squinted her eyes, and looked for him.

"I see the lights are a bit bright for you. You'll get used to it." Greg's voice was calm and confident.

"Okay, sounds good."

"I need to make a video recording of this audition so I can show the options to the playwright. Are you okay with that?"

"Yes, sure," said Abbie. Greg had a computer set up on a table next to him that was connected to a video camera. He pressed a few buttons.

"Great. So for starters, please tell us your name, your age, your height, and where you were born."

"I'm Abbie Andrews. I'm 24 years old. I'm five feet, six inches tall, except today I'm wearing some heels that make me a little taller. And I was born in Canada, but moved here when I was very little."

"Wonderful. And this is your first audition? What kind of theater experience do you have?"

"Yes, this is my first audition. I've seen a lot of things here, and always enjoyed them. I talked to some friends who encouraged me to come try out. I don't have any real experience, though I took one acting class in college."

"No problem, Abbie. We're very welcoming here, and there's lots of people who do shows with us who don't come with extensive experience."

Abbie sighed. "That's a relief! I was worried I'd be in over my head."

"I'm sure you'll do great," said Greg. "Now, we'll read the scene a few times, and then we might do a little improvisation."

Abbie nodded. "I read the part of Kim, right?"

"Yes," said Greg. "I'll read the part of Isaac. Are you ready?"
