The plan

Chapter 5 by TheAdventuresOfNikkiAndKalvin TheAdventuresOfNikkiAndKalvin

The afternoon sun blazed over the university quad, casting long shadows across the grass where Nikki sat curled into herself, her arms folded tightly across her chest, a reflex she used to hide her figure from passing eyes. Beside her, Kalvin sat with his hands tucked into the pockets of his hoodie, his gaze fixed on the football field with an intensity that burned.

Nikki’s eyes were fixed on the field, though her focus was secretly on the towering figure in the center of the drills. Marcus moved with an effortless, graceful power, his dark skin glistening as he whipped the ball downfield. Every time he pivoted, Nikki felt a strange, fluttering tightness in her stomach, though she quickly looked down at her sneakers, feeling a flush creep up her neck.

"He's impressive, right?" Kalvin whispered, his voice steady.

Nikki jumped slightly, shocked Kalvin noticed her stolen looks. "He’s... he’s very talented," she murmured, her voice barely audible. She glanced up just in time to see Marcus pause, his eyes scanning the sidelines until they locked onto hers. The star quarterback offered a bright, deliberate smile, his expression kind and disarming. Nikki felt her heart stutter, her breath catching as she instinctively pulled her sweater tighter.

As practice wound down, Kalvin stood up, brushing blades of grass from his jeans. "I'm going to go say hi," he said, keeping his tone casual.

"Oh, Kalvin, no," Nikki began, but he was already walking away.

She watched, nervous and fidgeting, as Kalvin approached the man. She expected Marcus to brush him off, but instead, Marcus beamed, clapping a heavy hand on Kalvin’s shoulder. They stood deep in conversation for several minutes, the taller man listening intently to whatever Kalvin was saying. Whatever it was, it made Marcus laugh—a deep, booming sound that drifted across the quiet quad.

When Kalvin returned, his face was alight with an energy Nikki rarely saw. "He’s hosting a get-together tonight," Kalvin said, his fingers twitching slightly. "He’s a great guy, Nikki. We talked for a while. He actually mentioned he’s been wanting to talk to you, too."

Nikki’s eyes went wide. "Me? Why would he want to talk to me?"

Kalvin leaned in, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial hum. "He thinks you're the most beautiful girl on campus. He’s got a huge crush on you. He practically begged me to make sure you came tonight."

Nikki felt a wave of genuine shock, followed by a rush of heat that had nothing to do with the sun. She had never been pursued before, never really wanted to be, but the thought of Marcus—so strong, so kind—wanting her attention made her head spin.

"I don't know, Kalvin," she whispered, twisting a lock of blonde hair around her finger. "I don't really do parties. I’m not good at... I don’t know what to do."

"You don't have to do anything," Kalvin insisted, his eyes hidden behind his glasses. "Just be there. Be yourself. He likes you exactly as you are. Don't you want to see him again?"

Nikki looked back toward the field where Marcus was already heading toward the locker rooms. He paused one last time, glancing back at her, and gave a subtle, encouraging nod. Her stomach did a somersault. She looked at Kalvin, whose expectant expression made her feel a strange sense of obligation. She trusted Kalvin more than anyone in the world.

"Okay," she breathed, her lips parting as she exhaled. "I'll go."

Kalvin smiled, a thin, tight line, and turned his gaze back to where Marcus had disappeared. He felt a familiar, frantic pulse in his chest—a mix of nerves and a dark, secret anticipation that he kept buried far beneath his academic exterior. Tonight was the start of something he had been dreaming about for years.
