The new boyfriend.

The door opens and the blood drains from your face when you see your ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend.

"Hey, dude," Brian grins.

"Hey," you try to hide the contempt in your voice.

"You need help bringing your stuff to your car?"

You eye him for a second to see if he's being genuine or not. "Sure," you reply, wanting to just get out of there as soon as possible. "Where's Kim?"

"In the bathroom," he replies. He leads you to the second bedroom, which used to be your home office but now is filled with boxes, both yours and, you suspect, his.

"So you found a new place, huh?" he asks.

"Yeah," you answer, looking at the boxes to make sure everything is still there. "Sharing a place with three girls."

"Dude!" Brian cheers, raising his fist up to do a fist bump. You would love to punch him in the face or at least ignore him but then you see your ex-girlfriend, Kim, standing at the doorway and you do the fist bump, much to your disdain.

"Hi, Mark," she says. You can sense the hurt in her voice and you cannot help but smile.

"Hey, Kim. Thanks for holding my stuff until I could find a new place," you reply, grabbing a box.

"No problem. I'm glad you found a place already," she says, moving out of the way for you and Brian to get through.

"Thanks," you respond cordially. "Do you mind getting the door?"

"Yes, of course," Kim says, holding the front door open as you and her new boyfriend head towards the elevator.

"So are the chicks hot?" Brian asks once you two are alone in the elevator.

You cannot believe he has the gall to probe you about your new roommates considering he was the one Kim had cheated with. You decide to continue to be the better man and let the past be the past -- once you are done moving the boxes the two of them will be forever out of your life. You look at him and grin, "Yeah, smoking hot."

"Are they single?" he asks.

"That's for me to know and for you to never find out!" you laugh as you unlock the trunk.

"That's cruel, dude!" Brian puts the box away. He continues to pester you on the way back to the apartment and the next few trips back to the car but you just give vague answers, making him even more curious.

"Thanks again, Kim," you gratefully tell your ex-girlfriend when you grab the last box and head out the door.

"Wait, Mark, can I talk to you for a bit?" she asks, closing the door behind her so that she can talk to you privately in the hallway.
