The mixer

The gymnasium hummed with anticipation, the usual fluorescent lights dimmed to a honeyed glow that softened the edges of everything—the polished basketball court repurposed as a dance floor, the round tables draped in burgundy cloths where board games waited untouched, the pair of curtained photo booths tucked in the far corner. John adjusted the cuff of his dress shirt for the third time in five minutes, watching as Elizabeth flitted between the snack table and the DJ booth making last minute adjustments.

"Going to be bustling in here pretty soon," George chuckled from beside him, the physics teacher's thick eyebrows knitting together as he tightened the last string of fairy lights above the food table.

John opened his mouth to respond when Virginia's voice cut through the air. "They're here," the biology teacher announced from the double doors, her Scandinavian height giving her an unobstructed view of the hallway. Her blonde braid swung like a pendulum as she turned back to face them, her lips quirking. "And based on the giggling, they've been pre-gaming in the dorms."

The first wave of students spilled into the gymnasium in a riot of perfume and rustling skirts, their high heels clicking against the hardwood like a staccato drumroll. John's pulse kicked when he spotted Emily near the front of the group—her golden hair loose around her shoulders instead of its usual ponytail, her blue dress hugging every curve before flaring out at the thighs. She caught his eye immediately, her pink lips curving into a slow smile that made his tie feel two sizes too tight.

Elizabeth materialized at his elbow, her fingers brushing his forearm as she leaned in. "This is going to be fun," she murmured, her breath warm against his ear. Before he could respond, she straightened and clapped her hands twice—the sound sharp enough to cut through the chatter. "Alright, ladies! Welcome to the second annual school mixer! Have fun and everyone stay safe, if you need any help just ask anyone of us teachers or Principal Lee.”
