Chapter 10 by missphaedra missphaedra

Where do you go?

The library

You walk quickly over towards the double doors of the library, avoiding running so as not to draw even more attention to yourself. You push the door open, and look around cautiously. At first sight, the place seems deserted. The main part of the library is a large, high-ceilinged, open-plan building, but the bookshelves which fill most of the room are much too high to see over, and you begin to wonder if coming here was such a good idea. At the far side, you know there’s a fairly large study area; perhaps Katie’s there.

You head towards the far side of the library, looking around you as you go, hoping there’s nothing to be afraid of. As you reach the history books, about half-way to the study area, you hear a noise off to one side. It sounds like it’s coming from the language section to your left, and you wonder whether it’s safe to approach, or if you should be fleeing while you still can. You stand still for a second, trying to make a quick decision. Just as you are trying to decide, you see a shape emerge suddenly at the far end of the avenue of books to your left.

You startle, before realising it’s a tall young man, with reddish-brown hair. You call out to him, relieved to see a fellow survivor.

“Hey – are you alright? Do you know what’s going on?”

He looks up at you, and you realise something is not right about him. His expression, which looked dazed a second ago, now seems to be slowly infusing with rage, and his eyes send a chill down your spine. As he fixes his gaze on you, you see that the irises are vivid red, the red you have seen before, in the eyes of the beast from the physics block.

You take a step back, and gasp in shock as another beast appears behind him, stepping slowly into the corridor of shelves, and into your view. It resembles the creature from the physics building, and although it is smaller, it still towers over the young man; had it not been for the floor-to-ceiling shelves you could not have missed it. Suddenly your brain kicks in: you take a deep breath and start to sprint towards the far side of the library.

Too late, you realise that you are running away from the doors – you can only hope the fire exits will give you some escape.

What do you do?
