The last of the line

Chapter 191 by Mrservus Mrservus

Morning came in thin and gold through the bungalow slats, and the room looked like a storm had chosen furniture at random.

Navia could not stand. Chevreuse could not line her eyes up, let alone her feet. Emilie had made it as far as sitting against a table leg with a blank label stuck to her thigh and no plan for what came next. Lynette was the only one who rose when Aether snapped his fingers — sore, leaking, ears slightly crooked, and still operational. The House training held where Fontaine polish had not.

He wrote the letter on the first scrap that was not soaked.

The back of Emilie’s ruined notebook page. Ink smeared where his hand was still impatient. No seal. No poetry. Just enough for a woman who already spent money like a weapon.

{letter signed "Aether"}

Ningguang.

Buy the girl. Lynette. Resort contract, one hundred thousand mora. Transfer to me. No term.

I want her.

{endletter}

He folded it once and put it in Lynette’s hand.

The effect was immediate. Fresh wetness ran down the inside of her thigh as her fingers closed on the paper, her own sale written in the same handwriting that had been in her hair all night. She looked at the letter the way other women looked at a ring. Not romance. Confirmation. The sweet, ugly little click of no longer belonging to a desk.

“You take that to the Tianquan,”
Aether said.
“You don’t lose it. You don’t explain it to anyone who isn’t her. You put it in her hand and you wait until the mora moves.”

Lynette nodded. Another slow leak tracked down toward her knee. She did not wipe it.

“I will not fail.”
Her voice was hoarse and certain.
“I will be yours. Properly. On paper.”
A beat, ears flicking toward the door as new footsteps hit the path outside.
“Thank you for letting me carry it. It is… better. That I am the one who delivers the receipt.”

He kissed her once, brief, proprietary, and sent her toward her clothes with a tap on the ass. Lynette dressed like a woman putting on a uniform over a creampie, letter tucked against her ribs, and the fact that she could walk was the only reason the next four were not stepping over a fifth body.

The last team came in like they owned the threshold.

Dehya first, grin already sharp, taking in the wreckage with the professional amusement of someone who had seen Aether do this to a village and a ship and a barn. Candace behind her, posture still doing the same job, eyes flicking from swollen Fontaine girls to the man standing in the middle of them. Nilou moved like the room was a stage she had been kept off of too long, bright and hungry. Collei — back from whatever hole she had been refining poisons in — looked at the dripping table, the unresponsive perfumer, the bodyguard who could not walk, and made a small, impressed sound that was not entirely sane.

“Finally,”
Dehya said.
“took nearly 5 days. We have been sitting on our hands like good girls.”

“We waited longest,”
Nilou added, already toeing Navia’s discarded glove out of the way.
“That should count for something.”

Candace did not waste the speech. She hooked Chevreuse under the arms, grunted at the dead weight, and started dragging the captain toward the porch with the same blunt care she used on drunk sentries. Dehya grabbed Navia. Collei, after a second of academic hesitation, took Emilie’s wrists and pulled, muttering about sample contamination and not meaning a word of it. Lynette held the door for them with the letter still in her fist, a leaking courier on her way to sell herself, and Nilou paused long enough to look Aether up and down like a meal that had been kept behind glass.

“She’s walking,”
Dehya observed, jerking her chin at Lynette.
“The other three aren’t. What did the cat do that they didn’t.”

“Lasted,” Aether said.

Lynette’s went pink. She slipped out past the dragging and the laughter, already pointed toward whatever wing Ningguang had claimed, the hurried ink warm against her skin. Behind her, the bungalow emptied of women who could not use their legs and filled with four who had been patient long enough to stop being polite about it.

Candace dumped Chevreuse in the shade, came back inside, and rolled her shoulders.

Collei’s gaze kept dropping to his cock and bouncing back up, the old crazy still in her, just aimed at living through the dose this time. Dehya laughed once, low, and kicked the recliner into a better angle with her heel.

“All right, hero.”
She hooked a thumb at the cleared bed.
“The night shift is out. Day shift is on. Try not to break our hips before lunch. Some of us still have to walk back.”

Aether looked at the four of them — lion, guardian, dancer, chemist — and felt the morning tilt from aftermath into the next long, stupid, welcome problem.
