Chapter 6 by cphi cphi

How does she respond?

The high school.

Sarona High school was a midsized high school, one of three high schools in the district. Serving grades 9 thru 12, the high school enrolled around 1800 kids.
Beth pulled into the faculty parking lot and made her way briskly to her homeroom. Sarona used a standard period schedule: Beth taught five classes a day each of them lasting around 43 minutes. Together with a planning period, and a lunch, Beth's day generally moved along at a good pace. Most days, she spent at least an hour after last bell working on more lesson plans. On Mondays, she was slated for detention duty, and on Thursdays she ran a Math club for gifted students. She was looking forward to skipping out early today. {if Shame < 50

Beth's first three class periods passed by without incident or anything of note occurring. With Spring Break less than two weeks away, most of the students were buzzing with their plans for the vacation. It made them a little harder to keep on task, but it was nothing that Beth couldn't handle{if Shame <50
},especially when it came to the boys. {endif

Beth had won the scheduling jackpot this semester: her planning period was right before lunch, giving her a nice long block of time without a class to teach. She relaxed in the teacher's lounge, eating warmed up lasagna and grading homework.
"Hello, Miss Wilson." The dry, flat voice of Charles Schiff, Serona's principal, lifted Beth's eyes from her work. He was a tall, lean-ish man in his mid forties, with square glasses and prematurely greying hair. He irked Beth in that, for all her time at the school, she could never accurately read his mood or predict what he wanted. {if Shame < 50
}He was handsome, though, despite his sternness and age. "Distinguished" was a little overdoing it, but not by much. {endif

"Mr. Schiff." Beth had decided on diffidence today. Alright...what does he want today?
"Mrs. Kelly has gone home with a stomach bug. I need you to cover detention this afternoon."
"Oh, Mr. Schiff..." No. NO NO NO NO.
"Miss Wilson, I don't have a choice, you are the only teacher available today." He shook his head when she opened her mouth to speak. "Miss Wilson, it's only one student."
All Beth could do is internally grumble. Asshole. She was sure there were other teachers available. Schiff could do it himself if he wanted. But she was relatively new, and shit rolled downhill. Sometimes it seemed he had something personal against her as well, but she couldn't figure out why. {if Scattered = 1
}Oh, I don't know, maybe your chronic lateness? {elseif Lazy = 1
}Oh, I don't know, maybe your lack of extra curriculars?
Hey, I run a math club! That's...one thing at least! {elseif Cursed = 1
}Maybe the universe had just decided to give her a shitty principal.

I guess it's only an hour. I can get some more work done and there will still be time to get dolled up-
