The formula wears off.

As Jake tip toed over to behind Cindy, he noticed that his hand was flickering between being seen and invisible. This made him panic and he ran under the bleachers, to try to figure out what was going wrong. Once he was under the bleachers, it went from being his hand, to his entire body that was jumping from being invisible to visible.
