How did pet girls evolve during the twilight of the empire?
The end of rome, a new beginning for the pets
The course of the late empire saw an increasing boom in the diversity and popularity of pet girls. Ornate decorations and new styles spread through provinces, before becoming popular in rome itself, while even lower class roman citizens began to partially imitate the high-prestige tradition.
The lower class citizens did not have the means to support a **** pet or a full time pet wife. Instead, it became common for roman wives of upstart families to dress up and act like pets during large public events. Of course, this remained fairly limited in its scope.
While the upper classes had fully embraced the pet girl phenomenon, the lower-classes, especially the landed but poor, saw it as a sign of degeneration.
The church, long persecuted but finally embraced by the Roman state, long since adapted itself to the needs of the patricians. In order to make itself more amenable to the wealthy, they quietly embraced the practice.
Man was the steward of the natural world. The guardian and keeper of all its animals and plants. Since women were created from men, as such being lesser and meant to be obedient, wasn't being kept as a pet a natural and moral state? After all, they argued in their sermons, a dog is protected and cared for by their master. It is obedient and helpful to Man, as god intended for his creation.
As Christianity spread through the empire, the message spread with it. The truly moral state of a wife, was to be collared and leashed at her husbands feet.
Still, they made sure that pet girls remained a status symbol of the wealthy by emphasising the virtues of a hard working woman. Only the wealthy should show their devotion in such a way that did not require hard work.
Over time, the empire began to fray at its edges. More and more germanic tribes settled at the borders or even inside the empire. Rome was overstretched, weakened and unable to respond to the myriad crises that followed in the wake of massive population movements.
The end did not come fast. The empire attempted its best to assimilate the new germanic peoples, latinizing them as they had done with so many others. It worked for some, but the writing was on the walls.
In 462 the last western emperor fell and the western roman empire was undone.
However, many roman traditions kept strong even the fall of the empire, chief among them the keeping of pet girls. The chiefs and nobles of the tribes that had toppled Rome, had long since learned about the strange practice. In the last decades, as Roman Emperors tried to stave off and bribe them into submission, they had received many such pet girls as gifts and tributes.
And while the traditions was strange and alien at first, they too quickly embraced it.
As the empire fell into ruin, new kingdoms arose from their ashes. And with them, a new form of pet girls.
