What next
The day after
The next morning, for almost a second, Natalie thought she’d dreamed the night before. Then the memory hit of the sounds he made, his hands trembling on her hips, the warmth of his cum against her skin. She smiled as she stretched, thinking of how they actually crossed that physical barrier.
Pulling her robe tight, she stepped out of her room. Aiden looked like he’d already been up for a while, as he stood at the island, with a glass of OJ in one hand, and the other scrolling idly on his phone. He must have heard her because his head turned, and a sheepish grin spread across his face.
“Morning,” he said.
“Morning,” she returned, moving to make coffee.
The vibe between them wasn’t tense, but more like both were unsure what to say. This wasn’t some guy she’d been dating, or would be gone until they called each other again, but someone that lived here. Her ex was the only other person she’d lived and slept with. But Aiden certainly wasn’t her ex, and she didn’t quite know what their relationship was yet.
“You beat me to it,” she said, nodding toward the coffee.
“Figured you might need it,” he replied. “You, uh… sleep okay?”
“I did.” She grabbed the cup he’d made for her, taking a careful sip before adding, “Better than I thought I would.”
He smiled into his mug. “Same.”
She leaned against the counter, watching him from the corner of her eye. The grin hadn’t left his face. He looked like a kid who got caught with his hand in the cookie jar, and wasn’t mad about it.
“You’re in a good mood,” she teased.
“Am I?” He tried to rein it in, but his mouth betrayed him. “Guess it’s just… nice. Not awkward at all…”
“Yeah, you look exactly like it’s just another morning,” she said with a small chuckle.
He laughed back, looking down at his juice. “Right. Sorry.”
They both stood there for a moment, drinking their drinks.
“Right, well, I’ve got work,” she said finally. “Early meeting.”
“Yeah. I’ve got class.” He glanced toward his backpack by the couch. “Group project presentations. Lucky me.”
She smiled. “Well, at least you’re starting the day in a good mood.”
He looked up from his juice. “Hopefully you are too.”
Natalie felt the flush creep up her neck but didn’t bother to hide it. “Maybe I am.”
He hesitated, then quietly spoke, almost sounding abnormally shy. “Last night was… good. Really good.”
She met his eyes, steady. “Yeah. It was fun. And… interesting.”
No guilt. Just truth.
He looked down and traced his thumb over the rim of his mug. “I don’t want to make things weird.”
“You’re not,” she assured him. “We just… need to figure out what this is. What it can be.”
He nodded, serious now but still smiling. “Whatever it is, I’m good with it. I like… this,” he said, making a gesture with his hand, waving back and forth between them.
Her chest tightened in a way that left her feeling a little like a schoolgirl. Walking by, she bumped his shoulder lightly with hers. “Go to class, Aiden. You’ll be late.”
He grabbed his bag, still grinning. “Yes, ma’am.”
She rolled her eyes. “And text me when you’re done with classes. I might want to grab dinner later.”
His eyes brightened. “Yeah? Sure. Yeah, absolutely.”
He started for the door, hesitated, then looked back with that goofy smile taking over his face again. “Have a good day, Nat.”
“You too.”
Just as she entered her bedroom, she heard the door shut. She exhaled and leaned against her dresser, sipping her coffee. The guilt she’d expected never came. She only felt a kind of happiness she wasn’t sure she was supposed to feel, considering all of the tension leading up to last night.
Lisa’s face flashed in her mind, impossible to ignore. She’d have to figure that out soon. For now, she let herself smile and enjoy the memory of last night that brought its own sense of relief.
