The coffee shop

Chapter 13 by mrdarcydoms mrdarcydoms

You arrive at the coffee shop ten minutes early. The place near the park is quiet at this hour, a handful of outdoor tables under the plane trees, the usual morning traffic moving past at a distance. You take a seat at one of the corner tables and order a black coffee while you wait.

Tanya appears right on time. She’s dressed simply, dark jeans and a soft sweater, the same easy confidence she has always carried. She spots you immediately and crosses the pavement with a small, familiar smile that doesn’t quite reach her eyes. When she sits she doesn’t go for the usual hug. The sister-like warmth is still there, but it’s tempered by the knowledge that this isn’t a casual catch-up.

“You sounded serious last night,” she says, setting her bag down. “Amy asked if everything was okay. I told her I didn’t know yet.”

You push the second coffee you ordered for her across the table. She wraps both hands around the cup and waits.

You don’t waste time.

“I saw the messages on Natasha’s phone last night. The ones from you. About the baby. About the dates not lining up with me.”

Tanya’s expression stills. She looks down at the coffee for a long second, then back up at you. The easy familiarity between you has always made honesty simpler than it is with most people. She doesn’t try to dodge.

“I told her she needed to tell you,” she says quietly. “I didn’t think she’d keep it this long. How much did you see?”

“Enough. Tanya, whose is it?”

She exhales slowly, the sound almost lost under the distant traffic. Around you the morning continues in its ordinary way: a dog walker passing, the barista calling an order inside, leaves shifting in the light breeze. None of it touches the weight that has settled over the small table.

Tanya meets your eyes and keeps her voice steady.

“It’s not yours. The timing doesn’t work. She knows it. I’ve known it for weeks. She made me promise not to say anything until she was ready, but ready never seemed to come. I’m sorry you found out like this.”

The words land cleanly and without drama. Across the table the woman who has always felt like a sister to you sits with the truth now fully in the open, waiting to see what you do with it.
