Chapter 67 by keron keron

What's next?

The beginning of a partnership

The next day, you go into the Tribune's offices for the first time in days, although you're not quite sure what you're doing there. You don't have the story for Laura that you had promised her. As expected, it only takes about 2 minutes after you walked into your office before there's a knock on the door and Laura enters without waiting.

"Hey Laura, what's up?" you ask, knowing what she wants.

"How's your story coming along? I need it today. Can you have it on my desk in an hour? What is it about?"

"Um, it turned out to be nothing. I was chasing shadows, I guess." You shrug and Laura's expression instantly changes to anger, but she holds her tongue as she remembers your bargaining chip over her, even though neither of you have brought it up in a long time.

Luckily, you're saved from any confrontation by an alert on your phone. It sounds like Laura received one too, as did many people outside your office in the newsroom. You look at your phone and it's a news alert saying that Bruno has bought the Tribune. You're not even done reading it when you get a text from him with a link to the story and telling you to not worry about working at the Tribune any more. You can keep your job for the cover for now, but nobody will ever ask you about a deadline again. Laura gets a text too, you assume about your arrangement with Bruno, and she looks at you confused, before storming out without saying a word, probably more concerned about her own job at the moment.

Laughing, you gather your things and leave the office. Later in the day, Bruno calls to discuss ideas to elevate your position in the world, and you have a few suggestions. In the end, you 2 work out a plan, and decide to put it into motion.
