Chapter 35

What's up with Lily?
The basic Good Girl
You had calmed whatever shock Lily had come from Emma's initial explanation, but she was still a long way from accepting this whole situation. You sat back down at the table and introduced yourself to Lily.
This was going to suck, but you started a monologue. "You know Emma was having problems with her boyfriend, right? Well, I think it was helpful for her to talk about that because... I think there was some problem with... I think we needed to figure why... I think the problem might have been... I think practice is the only way to... I think she made a lot of progress... I think she found it very helpful... I think everything that happened was all very reasonable, and you don't need to tell anyone about it."
You could feel the sweat beading on your forehead, and all of the small pulses of pain had melded into a strange swirling migraine.
Throughout your speech, Lily had been looking at Emma for confirmation, and Emma happily nodded along. Finally, Lily concluded "I guess that makes sense."
You needed a better superpower.
You also started to realize that the cafe was filling up, and suggested the three of you walk and talk. This cafe looked good. You should actually eat there some time.
As you walked, you found out that Lily's parents were old-school Chinese immigrants, whose favorite phrase was "good Chinese girls don't...". Apparently good Chinese girls don't have boyfriends, or go on dates, or go out with friends at times when they could be sneaking around doing unwholesome things, or stand on a bridge for too long (that one was new to you). Lily had, somewhat unwillingly, been playing the role of good Chinese daughter her whole life.
Emma added, "remember in school, they wouldn't even sign your permission slip!"
"Oh right," Lily confirmed, "I needed permission to take sex ed, and apparently good Chinese girls don't talk about such things. During those classes, I had to sit in the library. It was so embarrassing."
You asked, "so you didn't learn... anything?"
"Well, the librarian knew why I was there. She left out this book, 'Health and Sexuality for the Modern Teen' where she knew I would see it. I looked at that during those classes. It was really helpful, but I mean, it was just a book."
You suppressed a laugh. May god protect the librarians.
"It is too bad you haven't had a chance to learn anything else. I think I can help if you want."
"Really? Thank you John! But Emma told me you're just here for the weekend. I don't want to take too much of your time."
"No problem... none at all."
You took another look at Lily. She was a bit shorter than Emma, and a little more petite. Black hair past her shoulders, and beautiful almond eyes. No makeup, but the kind of pretty that's still stunning without makeup.
She was wearing shorts that were neither too tight nor too short. Her tank top wasn't too tight, too low on top, or too high on the bottom. No doubt these were approved clothes for a Good Chinese Girl™.

Just a Thought
Your thoughts become commands... if you can handle it.
The main character realizes that they can suggest a thought or action to anyone, just by starting the suggestion with "I think...". It's a superpower, but not actually very super: giving commands causes pain in proportion with the size of the push.
