Chapter 9 by tempura tempura

What next?

The backpack.

You spend the next minute or so comforting Yu. As the crying fades to sniffling, she pulls away from your embrace. "N-not to imply having horns or a tail makes you a monster," she says apologetically, with a pained laugh.

"It's fine, you have nothing to apologize for," you reply, with an understanding head nod.

She suddenly snaps her fingers. "Oh! The-uh, the backpack!" She jogs off towards where you originally woke up. As you follow her, you take stock of your surroundings. The water surrounding the beach is clearly the ocean, judging by the taste of salt in your mouth. The temperature of both the water and air is quite warm, about 74° Fahrenheit. About 10 meters away from you, the beach terminates into a dense jungle. You're still wearing the button-up shirt and slacks you'd had on from your date, though they're a little too warm for comfort. You also sneak a peak at Yu's new ass as she jogs. Dear lord, what an ass. She looks a little wobbly though. Maybe she's not used to her new mass?

"Here it is!" Yu calls, snapping you back to reality. As you approach the bag, Yu unzips it and begins displaying its contents to you. The inside is quite jumbled and empty, as if little attention was paid during its creation. Inside, there is:

  • An empty canteen.
  • An unlabeled map, presumably of the island.
  • A knife.
  • An envelope, opened by Yu, with a letter.

You swallow hard, and begin to read.

Congratulations! You have been selected for an all inclusive, one way trip to Finch Island! I'm sure you have a great deal of questions; worry not! All will be answered in this letter!

First off, what is Finch Island? Finch Island is a private island which was purchased by my master, and subsequently wiped from all records, with its original intent being to serve as a backup base of operations. Nowadays, it fulfills four purposes:

  1. It serves as a private prison and method of disposal.
  2. It serves as a means to awaken, strengthen, evolve, and cultivate quirks which may have potential.
  3. It serves as a method for creating and testing Nomu.
  4. It serves as entertainment.

Here's the rest of what I'll tell you, regarding the rules and workings of the island:

  1. Every week, I will have a crate of food teleported onto a rotating location on the island. There is nowhere near enough food to feed everyone.
  2. My Nomu may occasionally be set loose, to test their battle capabilities.
  3. It is encouraged that you be ready to fight for your life.
  4. If you perish, your corpse will be collected and turned into a Nomu.
  5. If you attempt to escape, you will be collected and turned into a Nomu.
  6. If you manage to catch my eye, you may be given a job offer, and the chance to leave the island.

Good luck!

You sit in silence. Was this some kind of joke? It had to be, right? No villain could be powerful enough to maintain something like this without a hero intervening, right? Then again, Mt. Lady was a hero... and here you were.

There's something you can't seem to shake from your head. Nomu. Where had you heard that word before? Where, where, where... Oh! That's right! The masked man had mentioned that word before. And wasn't that what the press had taken to calling the villains that attacked Hosu?

"Hey Yu," you ask. "What do you think this bit about being 'turned into a Nomu' is about?"

Yu shifts uncomfortably, grimacing. "It... It's not public knowledge yet. But. The monsters that attacked Hosu? Completly mindless. Just following orders. However, DNA, fingerprint, and dental records indicated that they were once human."

Suddenly, this doesn't feel like a joke. Thinking about the Nomu makes you remember something else though; hadn't that man said something about a 'gigantism and rage' pairing? And, with your quirk related traits fading, and Yu growing similar features... With a feeling of dread, the puzzle pieces start to fall together. Hadn't that man said that he could take and transfer quirks? And hadn't you heard something about an American villain that could use two quirks? What was his name? Wolfram?

"Hey Yu?" You ask slowly. "...Is your quirk still working fine?"

She looks puzzled. "Yeah? I used it when I woke up to check out the area. Why?"

Your theory confirmed, the sinking feeling of dread only worsens. You hoarsely whisper, "W-well, you see..."

Do you tell her the truth?
