Chapter 17
by HiBeGi
Time for this fight to enter its final act!
The Winner is...? (Jolyne vs Gwen)
Gwen walked to the edge of the building, eying the gap between the building she was standing on and the one her opponent was on. Normally such a matter wasn't an issue for her, but with her web-shooters damaged, she was going to have to rely on just her physicality for this one; perhaps jumping that gap would be impossible for a normal human, but with her enhanced physicality, it should be more than capable of getting her across, and even if she weren't able to make all the way to the edge, her ability to adhere to surfaces would assist her.
Gwen backed up, getting ready to build up some momentum for her leap, but right as she was about to dash forward, something caught her attention, causing Gwen to hesitate. The heroine awkwardly hobbled forward slightly, not committing to the full-speed sprint that she had prepared herself for; she would've fallen down had it not been for her impressive equilibrium. Gwen had noticed, just shortly before she decided to run forward, that her enemy could no longer be viewed by the edge of her own building; originally she had thought that Ms. . Prison Escapee decided to run away, but what had made Gwen hesitate was that she was able to spot Jolyne again, who is now somehow... running in the air. She was crossing the gap between the two buildings differently from how she normally gets around; it wasn't the mimic "web" swinging or the launching her that she had been doing before; no, here she just straight ran across thin air as if there were a platform below her.
It was whatever; Gwen was used to this girl having weird abilities; the issue was that she was approaching her. It wasn't like the convict hadn't gone on the offensive before in their battle, but typically when she did it was when Gwen was at a disadvantage. While, yes, her web-shooters had been disabled, Gwen didn't really think that she was in a disadvantageous place right now; in fact, she was moments away from continuing the battle. So either her foe was being overconfident or she was seeing something that Gwen was not.
Jolyne ran forward to the best of her ability; her legs were already screaming in agony at her just from her standing up, so her trying to run full speed wasn't doing them any favours. Not only that, but the surface she was running on wasn't exactly the most comfortable to travel across. Using her threads, Jolyne had unraveled sections of her body to create a bridge between the building and the water tower on the opposite building across from her, but due to the distance between the water tower and the building, Jolyne couldn't make the bridge threads as tightly knit since using too many threads would lead to her unraveling her body to a point where it could be lethal to or just making her body useless. As such, the bridge wasn't as wide as Jolyne had wanted it to be, and it was full of small gaps. She could have saved herself some extra threads by traveling from one edge to the next, but the water tower was where she wanted to be.
Upon reaching the water tower, Jolyne leapt off of her makeshift bridge, putting her back together by calling back her threads, closing the rather large holes in her body that she opened. The stand user grabbed onto the tower's supports and began to make her way down, jumping from beam to beam until her sock-clade feet felt the surface of the roof below them. With one hand still resting against the tower's supports, Jolyne turned to face the woman standing behind her, her head turned just enough so that only one half of her face was visible. "Yo!" Ghost-Spider sarcastically greeted with a wave, her face now being exposed enough to be visibly annoyed. Jolyne stayed silent, just glaring at the heroine behind her. "What's wrong, didn't think I would spot you?" Gwen teased, swaying her head to the side a bit as she rested a hand on her hip.
Jolyne huffed, "Obviously you would. You have eyes, don't you dumbass?" The stand user rudely replied as she turned around, removing her hand from the scaffolding. "I'm just waiting for you to get this started already!" The half-naked woman shouted before raising her arms into what Gwen could only presume was a peculiar-looking judo stance. She wasn't planning on fighting her herself, was she? From the moment this fight had started, her little ghost friend or whatever that ability was had been doing all the heavy lifting. Did she hit her head at some point? What made her think she'd be able to keep up with her? If it wasn't obvious that she was up to something before, than it was now, but what exactly, Gwen had no clue.
The two nearly bare women stood at a standstill underneath the water tower, their gaze never leaving each other. There was a firm silence between them, with the only thing audible being the busy streets of New York below them. Though one sound broke through the rather repetitive cacophony from down below, the sound of a bell tolling. For a moment, both blondes glanced away from each other, looking in the direction of where the sound came from. Off in the distance, just three streets away was a church, the belfry at the top of the structure housing a bell that had been tolled, that a funeral was in session.
A smirk crept its way up Jolyne's mouth as her eyes fell upon Gwen once more. "That bell is tolling for you, asshat." The stand user taunted. Gwen simply rolled her eyes in response; perhaps part of her would've found that line eerie had it not been for that last part. The two resumed glaring at each other, not having budged from their standstill, the only change being the sound of the bell in the background. And the moment the bell finished tolling, Jolyne lunged at the heroine.
While her legs cried out in agony, Jolyne pushed through the pain; it was far from the worst thing she's experienced. The Joestar had practically thrown herself at Ghost-Spider with how quickly she ran forward, almost appearing as if she was moments away from falling to the ground from how forward leaning the upper half of her body was, though this was merely a way for her to mask her next move. Without any warning, Jolyne leaned backward in tandem with her raising her left leg up to perform a front kick.
For a brief moment, Gwen had been caught off guard for a number of reasons. First, her opponent had taken a defensive stance yet was the one to make the first move. Then, when she did attack, she had used the front of her body to cover legs, preventing Gwen from seeing how they were positioned for an attack. And finally, was the fact that she attacked without her little spirit friend. Despite there being a lot of process in such a quick span of time, Gwen still managed to avoid the attack, leaning backward before the heel of Jolyne's foot connected with her chin. Gwen didn't doubt that Jolyne was a skilled fighter, but the difference in physicality between the two of them was just far too great; it made the efforts Jolyne was going through seem like a completely futile effort. So, why was she?
Jolyne gritted her teeth at the sight of her enemy dodging her attack, but in spite of the awkward posture her body was positioned in and the pain in her legs begging her otherwise, Jolyne kept her leg raised up high in anticipation for the superheroines next move. In the same moment that Jolyne had decided to hold her leg up, Gwen rushed forward to make use of the opening that Jolyne had made for herself. In response to seeing her opponent position herself back into the range of her kick, Jolyne performed an axe kick, throwing down her leg, her heel poised to crash in the back of Ghost-Spider's head. But instead her heel slammed onto the concrete floor below it, her sock providing very little cushioning against the impact. Gwen had dodged once again, and with the help of her spider-sense and the fact that such an attack was so obviously telegraphed, Gwen avoided it by accelerating while shifting her body to the left at the last moment, allowing the spider-totem to continue advancing.
The heroine now stood in front of the awkwardly crouched felon, her fist brought back in preparation for a blow straight into Jolyne's face. Gwen was going for the knockout, having grown sick of this battle, the **** held behind her fist being held back just enough not to kill the criminal. But when Gwen swung her fist, it was a complete miss. Not because Jolyne had dodged; her fist had been off target, like it pushed slightly from where she had been aiming, ineffectively passing over Jolyne's shoulder.
Her attack had been redirected by an invisible ****, but it felt different than how it happened before. It hasn't like there was someone smacking her arm away or grabbing hold of her to stop the attack completely; her attack was allowed to be performed, just off target. Gwen only a mere second to blink in confusion before her eyes darted toward Jolyne, who looked back at her with a stern expression. The stand user thrusted out her hand, the palm of her hand slamming against Gwen's chin and pushing her head back. Normally an attack like this wouldn't hurt in the slightest, but due to Gwen's punch causing her body to lead forward a bit, the sudden halting of the movement caused pain to shoot up her neck.
The heroine let out a grunt as she hopped backward into a crouched position, one of her elbows resting against her thick thigh, which used to hold up her head as she caressed her chin. She had been expecting a different type of counterattack; she had been waiting for the moment that her spider-sense blared out at her, warning her of an oncoming invisible strike, but it had never come. Instead, her spider-sense warned her at the last second of Jolyne's palm thrust, which at that point Gwen could do nothing about. It hadn't even warned her about whatever redirected her attack.
Gwen furrowed her brows in contemplation and mild irritation; she had to have been using that "evil spirit" of hers. But in a way that was to avoid her spider-sense, how? Spider-Gwen slowly lifted herself up, never taking her eyes off of Jolyne, who continued to stare back at her with the same stern expression. The one to make the next move was Jolyne, who had once more sprinted forward toward Gwen. Not even letting the prison escapee get off her attack, Gwen swung out her right leg, but once more found her attack to be off the mark, her kick not even managing to clip Jolyne's ear. Similarly to before, her spider-sense rang out, signaling out the stand user's next attack, which was an elbow aimed toward her throat.
Being much more prepared than last time, Gwen blocked the attack, cushioning an already rather weak attack with her forearms. A blow to the throat would still feel rather uncomfortable, no matter how little damage the attack actually did. The heroine threw her arms apart in order to push her foe off of her, though due to how enhanced her strength is, she ended up sending Jolyne flying backward, causing her back to slam into one of the supports of the water tower.
While happy that an attack had landed, even if accidentally, Gwen's frustration was growing more and more by the moment. Why didn't her kick connect? It had been the same as the punch she threw earlier, with her leg being moved ever so slightly to make her attack entirely pointless. There was something that Jolyne was doing to her Spider-Sense that wasn't picking up on. The Spider-Woman closed her eyes and tuned out the outside world, just focusing on just her and Jolyne; her Spider-Sense honed in on every little movement each of them made. Even with her eyes shut closed, Gwen could feel a smirk crawl up Jolyne's lips as she picked herself up.
The stand user began to circle around Gwen, an arm sliding across the tower's supports as she passed by them. Gwen wasn't entirely sure what she was trying to do, her Spider-Sense gave her an advanced awareness of her surroundings, it didn't give her the ability to read minds, but if the heroine had to take a shot in the dark, she would guess that Jolyne was attempting to find an opening in Gwen's defense in order to make a move. A rather pointless endeavour since at this point she should have figured out about the basic functionality of her Spider-Sense.
After circling around Gwen a few times, Jolyne made her move, rushing toward Gwen from behind. The Joestar swung out a kick aimed toward the back of Gwen's head, which was easily dodged by Ghost-Spider, who then attempted to retaliate with a spinning hammer fist aimed toward her opponent's jaw. But once again, her attack missed having been redirected; this time though, Gwen could tell what had happened. It was the tiniest of defenses, a barrier, basically what felt like a single thread, from one of Jolyne's hands to the other. Whenever Gwen went for an attack, it would make contact with the thread, sliding off of it and away from the intended area. It was the simplest defense possibly, and regrettably, an annoyingly strong one.
The two blondes then began a dance of blows with neither of them getting to land an attack on the other, which only increased Gwen's frustration, who now bared her teeth in anger. It didn't matter how hard or how fast she threw out an attack; Jolyne would be ready with her defense, and it would slide right off of it. The two had been at this for so long that the sun was beginning to set, not that Gwen could see; the only breaks the two got were whenever Gwen got a chance to push the stand user back or when either of them decided to back off from the other. They were only small breaks, but both girls used them whenever they got the chance. With each break, Jolyne would circle around Gwen; this repetitive behaviour had the heroine on high alert, especially since each time the escaped convict circled her, this claustrophobic sensation began to stir in Gwen's body. Her Spider-Sense was picking up on this feeling that she was surrounded, but for whatever reason, her movements were undisturbed, nor was there a sense of immediate danger. It wasn't like the two versus one that her Spider-Sense had been detecting earlier in the battle; it was just one immediate "threat" with a sense of uneasiness surrounding her.
But in between these short breaks, Gwen used the chance to analyze the situation, trying to figure out just how to get past Jolyne's defense. If it wasn't a matter of strength or speed that could defeat it, then perhaps it was a matter of anticipation. The two blondes reengaged themselves into their duels, where the trading of attacks began once more. Gwen had to lull Jolyne into a sense of confidence that Gwen hadn't figured out a way past her single thread defense. The heroine waited for the right moment to prepare her move, and when the time came, she threw a fist toward the felon, who of course prepared to deflect the attack, holding the thread out the moment Ghost-Spider's fist was about to connect with it. But, at the very last second, Gwen's fist halted, her knuckle barely grazing the blue thread.
Jolyne didn't even get a chance to widen her eyes in surprise, her instincts kicking in the moment her brain recognized that fact that she had been faked out; the stand user attempted to step back out of range of Gwen's true attack, a heel kick swung downward, but would ultimately fail to fully escape it as the heroine's foot dug into her skin before it was dragged down, accidentally creating a rather large laceration across Jolyne's abdomen and chest as well as cutting through the centre core of her gray bra. Gwen's foot would continue down, having just missed Jolyne's waist thanks to her movement, and crash into the roof of the building, causing the structure to shake and throwing chunks of concrete about from the **** of the impact.
The Joestar fell to the ground, having barely willed herself to catch herself with her hand before she faceplanted against the ground. Jolyne placed a hand against her stomach; the cut was rather deep, with a huge excess of blood begging to flow out of it. Had the attack fully landed, it would have no doubt disemboweled her. Was that damn superhero counting on her to have at least somewhat dodged it, or was it an accident... Or perhaps she was no longer holding back and was actually going for the kill. Well, it didn't matter much since she still had the advantage.
The stand user glanced up toward Ghost-Spider, making sure her eyes were still closed shut, before feeling the ground below her for a piece of rubble that the heroine had just kicked up. Grabbing a hold of a small chunk of concert, Jolyne awaited Gwen's next move before enacting her own plan. When Spider-Gwen rushed at her, intending on finishing her off, Jolyne tossed the piece of concrete at her.
Sensing an incoming projectile, Gwen titled her head to the side, letting the chunk of concrete race past her. And then her spider-sense went off against her, warning her of that. Quickly raising arms up, Gwen blocked just at the right moment to block a strike to face from 「STONE FREE」. "ORA!" The stand cried out as its fist pushed against Gwen's forearms as they struggled to hold back the might of the stand's attack. Jolyne had finally cracked out her evil spirit again after all this time. Why? Was it because she had been hit and became ****, or maybe- Gwen's thoughts were caught off when her spider-sense went off again, but the danger wasn't coming from the threat in front of her but instead from behind.
Gwen titled her head to side once more, letting something race by her head. It had been that chunk of concrete that Jolyne threw at her before, but how the hell did it suddenly return to her? Gwen would've loved to ponder on it for a moment but wouldn't have been given the chance as spider-sense went off, warning her of an incoming knee from 「STONE FREE」, which slammed into her arms, forcing them upward. The heroine began to shift her body, preparing herself for whatever attack the stand had for her next, but the threat wouldn't be coming from the stand but instead that stupid piece of concrete against, which was once more hurtling toward her. Despite her spider-sense having warned of the in-coming danger, Gwen had barely managed to avoid it, the jagged piece of rubble having torn off a chunk from her tattered mask; at this point she was sure how much of her secret identity was intact at the moment.
One piece of her concrete somehow magically returning back to try and pelt her was already bad enough, but to make matters worse, Jolyne had thrown three more chunks at her, adding onto the increasing amount of projectiles that Gwen had to dodge. And just like the first piece, these as well rebounded back at her. So, not only did she have to use up energy avoiding projectiles, but she also had to deal with the threat of 「STONE FREE」's ****. It was quite the struggle, to put it lightly.
"ORA!" 「STONE FREE」shouted as it fired off a series of kicks that Gwen avoided by dropping down to the ground, having to also angle her body in a way to avoid two chunks of concrete flying around from crashing into her. The heroine let moan of displeasure, having grown tired of not just this routine of constantly dodging but also this battle itself. But, in the moments that Gwen had begun to think about giving up, her blue eyes lit up when she spotted an opportunity to act.
From her current position, Spider-Gwen rushed forward, diving beneath the stand that hovered above her and charging directly toward its user. She wouldn't give the stand user a chance to recall her stand; she'd be completely open for attack, with her only defense being something that Gwen now knew how to get past. The second that she sensed that single thread appear in front of Jolyne, the superhero leaped up, linking her fingers together and curling them into a fist. "Goodnight, Irene," Gwen shouted, throwing down her cupped fist, aiming for it to crash down upon Jolyne's head to knock her out. But as she dropped down, she suddenly sensed a thread appear in front of her, and then another, and another; before Gwen knew it, she was pressed up against a wall of threads holding her back from attacking their owner. "What?!"
“Do you actually not know my name, or is this some attempt to piss me off?” Jolyne stated, her voice tinged with irritation. In that moment of surprise, Gwen finally snapped her eyes open after having them shut for what felt like hours, catching a glimpse of Jolyne’s current appearance. Her entire body was riddled with large gaps in it, to the point where she could probably trigger someone’s trypophobia just by looking at her. She had unraveled her body once more, unraveling as much of it as possible without it inhibiting her ability to function. The reason why she had kept circling around Gwen was to wrap those threads of hers around the water tower as much as possible; this is where that claustrophobic feeling had come from, she had completely surrounded the heroine.
After landing on the wall of threads, Spider-Gwen felt herself flying backward, propelled by the recoil. Soaring backward, Gwen had been left in a prone state, with her ability to move having been greatly limited. When her spider-sense alerted her to the incoming projectiles still bouncing around the cage of threads, Gwen could only inwardly groan, knowing she was powerless. When the first chunk of concrete hurtled toward her, the heroine avoided it by twisting her body at an angle where it would just harmlessly pass by her. When the other three chunks raced towards her, and the first chunk rebounded back towards her due to a nearby thread, Gwen was left with on other choice but to endure it.
The four concrete projectiles crashed into Gwen’s body, causing the superhero to let out a moan of agony as a sharp pain shot throughout four areas of her body. The impacts sent her body spinning uncontrollably through the air, until she landed on a wall of threads, which halted all momentum and threw her to the ground.
Breathing heavily, Gwen struggled to pick herself up off the ground, the pain she had endured throughout the fight finally having gotten to her. Having nearly depleted her last reserves of stamina, a hero could still do one thing: keep pushing forward. With one last heave, the heroine stood up, her knees buckling briefly in exhaustion. She took a few seconds to catch her breath, time that her foe granted her as she slowly sauntered over to the Spider-Woman. Gwen could only glare at the felon as she approached her, balling her hands into fists in anticipation. When the two came to be in arm's reach of each other, the blonde hero took in a final deep breath, steeling herself to reengage in battle once more; lifting her arm out, Gwen let out a scream as she threw a punch toward Jolyne, giving it her all to finish the stand user. But her efforts were in vain as her spider-sense warned her of the threads surrounding her, which suddenly went from limp to taut, binding her arms and chest in place.
Her attack her having been halted, New York’s Ghost-Spider had been left **** to attack, with her being unable to do anything despite her spider-sense screaming at her. “ORA!” 「STONE FREE」 cried as it launched its knee into Gwen’s abdomen, sending the hero flying back, with the threads still wrapped around her body. Her flight was cut short when more threads went from limp to being taut, wrapping themselves around her body as she flew into them. The Spider had found herself caught in someone else’s web and could only struggle as she found herself being pulled toward her opponent’s fangs.
“That’s it, right there,” Jolyne mused to herself as she wound up the thread she made, pulling them all back toward her. Threads caught in the path between Gwen and Jolyne wrapped around the heroine's body, adding to the ever-growing amount of threads already encircling her. Soon enough, Ghost-Spider would end up tightly encased in threads, preventing even her ability to quiver. “That right there... is a good look on you!” Jolyne shouted as she commanded 「STONE FREE」to grab hold of a bundle of thread connecting her to the swath of thread encasing Gwen Stacey and yank it toward them.
As the cocoon of thread flew toward them, stand and stand user readied themselves to unleash of the barrage of attacks, assaulting their target with all their might as soon it had come in range. "ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA!!!!!!!!!!!!" It was like an unless wave of punches of kicks crashed down upon Gwen, the Spider-Woman having to endure attacks from both 「STONE FREE」and Jolyne herself, though the convicts attacks were practically harmless to her in comparison to those coming from the stand.
Soon, any scrap of clothing that Gwen had been wearing at the moment had been reduced to nothingness from the rain of punches and kicks coming from the two, reducing the heroine from the superhero Ghost-Spider to just plain ol’ Gwen Stacy in her birthday suit. “ORAAAAAA!!!” Jolyne and「STONE FREE」let out one last battle cry, slamming their final and strongest kick around the encasing of thread, which **** Gwen to come flying out of it, her bare body soaring through the air off the roof of the building and across the skyline of the city block. Her body was launched hard enough that she flew toward the distant church, hurtling toward the belfry and crashing into the bell itself.
For a split second, the bell began to toll due to the impact, cracks forming across the side that Gwen’s **** body had struck, before, in the next instant, the bell completely shattered, allowing Gwen to continue flying off to the horizon; her bare body soaring over a few more buildings before eventually dropping down into some random alleyway.
Jolyne planted a sock-clad foot against the edge of the roof, her green eyes focused on the blonde heroine as she flew off, watching her all the way until she was eventually no longer visible. “And there’s the bell,” the stand user quipped, jokingly remarking that the brief tolling of the now shattered bell signaled the end of the battle, much like a bell being rung at the end of a boxing match. Using her threads, Jolyne stitched closed the laceration that the superhero’s kick had opened up on her body. Although the profuse bleeding had stopped, a stinging pain lingered where the wound had been; glancing down, the Joestar took a moment to assess the current state of her outfit. She was left wearing only her gray bra, panties, and socks, which were all stained with her blood from the earlier wound; the bra had been torn open at the centre gore from the kick.
Jolyne let out an annoyed huff. “Good grief, what a pain in the ass that was,” she grumbled, shrugging and shaking her head before turning around and walking off to find a way down the building, away from prying eyes.
