The Trap Closes
The days that followed blurred into a single, dull nightmare of harsh monitor glare, formulas, and sleep deprivation. My room smelled of cold coffee and stale air. While Loona spent her days at university and Vanessa attended her appointments, I spent every free minute after school anchored to my desk. My fingers typed out measurement series on wave optics automatically, drafted millimeter-precise diagrams, and composed page upon page of theoretical derivations.
Compounding this was Loona’s unrelenting workout regime, which she enforced with iron discipline every other day. Push-ups to failure, squats, planks—my body altered rapidly under the constant strain. Whenever I caught a hurried glimpse of myself in the bathroom mirror each morning, the sharp, defined contours of abdominal muscles stood out clearly above my narrow waist; the clear outline of a six-pack had surfaced, forged from drill and total obedience. Yet the physical change brought no pride. It was merely visible evidence of how seamlessly Loona was remolding me, turning my own frame into an instrument operated under her direction.
Every save sequence at the desk etched itself into my memory. Loona monitored the progress of the physics portfolio each night. Without a word, she would slide her black USB drive into the port, pulling the raw files along with metadata, edit histories, and timestamps onto her drive before unplugging it. She left no traces, gave no affirmation—only a terse, assessing look that reminded me every typed line was weaving a double noose.
By Monday of the second week, the deadline had arrived. The heavy, matte-black folder lay before me on the school desk. Forty pages, laser-printed, complete with structured sections, flawless calculations, and a cover page that already bore Emma’s name in an elegant font. Only the final page remained blank: the binding declaration of originality.
During the long break, Emma made her approach. She wore an expensive leather jacket, hair styled to perfection, lips coated in the glossy rose tint I had been sent down Tauentzienstraße to buy ten days prior. Leon stood a few yards away by the windows, talking with two other classmates.
“Let’s see it,” Emma demanded bluntly. Her hand reached out impatiently the moment she reached my desk.
I slid the folder across the wood. She snatched it, flipped back the clear plastic cover, and rifled through the pages with quick, sharp fingers. Her eyes darted over the figures, the detailed experimental diagrams, and the extensive blocks of formulas. A thin, condescending smirk worked its way onto her lips.
“Not bad,” she murmured under her breath, almost annoyed that she couldn't find a single flaw. “Herr Seidel won’t believe his eyes when the substitute drops this off at the hospital. That’s an easy fourteen points.”
Pulling a ballpoint pen from her bag, she flipped deliberately to the final page and touched the nib to the dashed line below the printed text.
*I hereby certify that this work was completed independently and without the use of any sources other than those indicated.*
She didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. With a sweeping, arrogant motion, she signed her full name, underlined it with a flourish, and slammed the folder shut with a crisp snap.
“If a single detail in there is wrong, John, I’ll have your hide,” she warned quietly, spinning on her heel to rejoin Leon, holding up the folder in quiet triumph.
My stomach seized completely. The trap had snapped shut, exactly as Loona had predicted.
When I arrived home that afternoon, the apartment was eerily quiet. The faint hum of the underfloor heating accompanied my steps through the entryway. Kicking off my shoes, I stepped down the hall in stockinged feet.
Vanessa was lounging on the cream sofa in the living room, absorbed in a magazine. Her legs were drawn up on the cushions, bare soles turned toward the room. Over the past two weeks, a quiet routine had set in: after her especially grueling days at the yoga studio, she took it entirely for granted that I would attend to her tired feet and calves. She always rewarded me afterward with a few bills from the household cash—my father’s money—yet that very payment made the submission sting with a deeper humiliation. It was my own father’s earnings being handed down by my stepmother to compensate my subservience, treating me like hired help in my own home.
Hearing the faint creak of the floorboards, she looked up and offered a gentle smile.
“There you are, John,” she said in her usual calm voice. “Come in for a moment. Loona will be out of the bathroom shortly.”
I stepped closer with hesitation, school bag hanging heavy on my shoulder, stopping two paces short of the sofa. My eyes were pulled inevitably toward her bare feet, her skin catching the soft glow of the ceiling fixtures.
“Set your bag down,” Vanessa instructed with quiet, undeniable familiarity. She gestured toward the rug before her feet with a slight flick of her hand. “The double session at the studio was exhausting today. You know exactly which spots in my heels and calves carry the most tension.”
No command, no overt threat—just the absolute certainty that my place was on the floor before her. Letting my bag slide to the floor, I lowered myself slowly onto the thick wool rug. The dull scrape of the resin cage reminded me of my limits with every bend. Reaching out carefully, I took hold of her feet; the warmth of her skin transferred to my hands, and I began working circular motions into her heels and tight calf muscles.
Just then, the hallway door swung open. Loona stepped into the room. She was dressed in tailored black trousers and a white silk blouse, her hair pulled back tightly. Stopping in the archway, arms crossed over her chest, she looked down at me. Her gaze swept over my kneeling posture, taking in Vanessa’s relaxed expression before locking squarely onto mine.
“Did she sign it?” Loona asked in a low, conversational tone, phrased carefully enough that her mother would hear it only as routine chatter about school.
Swallowing hard, my hands kept moving along the top of Vanessa’s arches. “Yes. Earlier today.”
Vanessa closed her eyes, letting her head sink back into the pillows as my fingers moved in an unbroken rhythm across the arches of her feet and the taut muscle along her calves. She seemed completely detached, soothed into ease by a ritual that had long ceased to need spoken instruction. There was no room for hesitation; my hands worked with mechanical regularity.
Loona remained motionless beside the frame. She tracked every movement of my fingers, noting the faint tremor in my forearms and the thin sheen of sweat on my forehead. Then she took a step closer to the couch, the hem of her dark trousers brushing against my knees on the carpet.
“Mother,” Loona said with casual softness, never taking her eyes off me. “You should give him a bit extra today. He has been remarkably useful these past two weeks. Both around here and with his academic responsibilities.”
Vanessa let out a soft, contented breath, her eyelids fluttering open as she reached for her handbag on the side table. Unclasping her wallet, she drew out two folded twenty-euro bills and placed them directly onto the wool pile beside my right knee.
“Of course, darling,” my stepmother murmured with a faint smile. “You are truly sweet, John. Hardworking and reliable. Take that with you afterward. Your father would be pleased to see you making good use of your time to earn a little on the side.”
The words struck with crushing irony. The banknotes rested silently on the rug, printed with money my father transferred monthly into the shared family account. Vanessa was compensating my subjugation with his funds, while he remained thousands of miles away believing his son was being raised as an equal in a modern, balanced household.
“Thank you, Vanessa,” I managed. My voice felt hollow, entirely detached from my chest.
“Good,” Vanessa said, drawing her legs back and smoothing the line of her skirt. “I’ll take a quick shower before we order dinner. Let your legs rest for five minutes, John, then clear the table.”
She rose smoothly from the sofa, stepped barefoot past me, and padded quietly down the long hallway toward her bedroom. The click of the bathroom door shutting severed the thin veneer of domestic calm.
The moment the lock engaged, the atmosphere shifted instantly. The gentle, familial mask fell from Loona’s features. She looked down at me, dark eyes sharp and focused.
“Get up,” she ordered quietly.
I obeyed without delay. My joints popped faintly as I pushed up from the dense rug. The unyielding weight between my thighs served as an immediate reminder of who ran the house. I kept my chin tucked, avoiding her gaze, but Loona stepped forward, placing two cool fingertips beneath my jaw to force my head up.
“Look at me, John.”
I met her stare. There was no mockery there—only calculated resolve.
“Emma feels untouchable,” she said with sharp precision. “She signed the paper. The physics portfolio is sitting in the substitute’s mailbox. In Emma’s mind, the matter is settled—she thinks she’s broken you and extorted an effortless grade out of it.”
Releasing my chin, she turned and reached for the smartphone lying on the console table. With a few swift swipes, she pulled up a file.
“But she’s grown greedy. And greed breeds carelessness. I received a message from her earlier. She’s throwing an exclusive pre-graduation party next Saturday at her parents’ villa while they’re away for the weekend in Wannsee. She invited me—and she specifically asked me to bring you along. As staff. To run the coat check, clear empty glasses, and wait on Leon’s circle.”
A cold chill ran straight down my spine. “She wants to humiliate me in front of everyone.”
“Of course she does,” Loona countered coolly, a faint, predatory smile touching her lips. “She thinks she owns you. She wants to show her friends just how docile my stepbrother has become. But that is precisely where we snap the snare shut.”
Slipping the phone away, she held my eyes once more.
“I didn't just back up your drafts and the file timestamps to my drive. Last night, Emma bragged to me in our chat about how easy you were to manage, sending along a photo of the binder with her pen poised right over the signature line. She handed me everything we need in black and white. But that isn't enough for me. We take the rest at that party.”
“What rest?” I asked, voice strained, the pounding at my temples refusing to settle.
“Emma keeps secrets from Leon,” Loona whispered, her tone dropping to an intent murmur. “And far more from her parents. There are files on her second phone that no one at that school can ever see. On Saturday, you will play the dutiful errand boy to perfection. You will attend to her every demand, clear every cup, and swallow every petty slight. And while she’s busy reveling in her victory before her friends, I will ensure that the rest of her leverage falls entirely into my hands.”
Closing the final inches between us, she laid her palm flat against my chest, feeling the heavy thud of my heart through the thin cotton of my shirt. Her fingers traced down over the firm ridges of my stomach, cold and deliberate, like a handler assessing the condition of their property.
“You’ve been training well, John,” she murmured softly. “Your body learns quickly. Now your head just needs to understand that you are seeing this through to the very end. Come Saturday, Emma belongs to us.”
