The Symphony of Ruin

Chapter 32 by Perversidade3

The icy wind from Gotham Harbor lashed at the rusted cranes and abandoned industrial frameworks. Below, the docks were a sea of armed henchmen, but the true epicenter of the chaos lay in the eastern sector: the old port warehouse that had been transformed into Dr. Horror’s makeshift laboratory.

Far removed from Odette’s chaotic grandeur or Fries’s methodical coldness, Dr. Horror’s base reeked of formaldehyde and burnt circuitry. It was a sanctuary of technological and biological abominations.

The Incursion

The reinforced steel main door didn't yield to a conventional explosion; it simply collapsed inward in perfect cubes, as if the matter had been digitized and erased.

"Your step synchronization was off by less than four seconds, Barbara," Daria noted, crossing the threshold with lethal elegance while twirling a combat staff that crackled with pure energy at its tip.

"The data traffic on the secondary network was encrypted with obsolete—yet fascinating—neural signatures," Barbara retorted, already connecting her wrist terminal to a central wall panel. Her fingers flew across the holograms, isolating the building's security systems. "Got it. Dr. Horror is in the underground lab. And... God, Daria, Rachael was right about him bypassing standard safety filters. What he’s doing to those prisoners defies human biology."

Before Daria could respond, the corrugated metal ceiling above them groaned.

From the shadows of the ceiling, surgical blades and cables plummeted in a razor-sharp rain.

"Hahaha... intruders in my sanctuary of pain? What a waste of precious biological material!" Dr. Horror’s distorted, echoing voice reverberated through the speakers scattered across the ceiling. The scientist tumbled from a ventilation shaft, wearing a lab coat stained with fluorescent substances and a cybernetic visor that covered half his face, emitting beams of red light. Behind him, two crudely stitched-together monstrosities—human carcasses modified with hydraulic pistons—roared, charging forward with brute force.

"Barbara, handle the heavy gear!" Daria ordered, without even looking back.

"I’ve already closed their thermal loop. The pistons will lock up in... three, two, one..." Barbara murmured. With a quick command on her keypad, a localized electromagnetic pulse struck the creatures' backs. The automatons froze mid-lunge, collapsing to the floor like useless scrap metal.

Dr. Horror hissed in rage, firing hypodermic needles loaded with mutagenic toxins from his mechanical gloves.

Daria smiled—a smile that carried all the cold-bloodedness inherited from the Al Ghuls. She didn't dodge the needles; she anticipated their trajectory. With a fluid motion, she spun her staff, batting one of the projectiles back into the scientist's own shoulder.

"Argh!" Dr. Horror staggered, tripping over his own equipment.

"Daddy said not to kill you," Daria said, approaching with deliberate steps, her silhouette casting a giant shadow against the metal wall. "But he didn't specify the level of psychological trauma needed to ensure your cooperation."

The scientist tried to activate an emergency device on her glove, but Barbara—with a quick, precise kick to the side of the main control panel—cut the power to the entire sector, plunging the laboratory into the bluish gloom of the emergency lighting.

Daria closed the distance in a fraction of a second. With a sharp strike from her combat baton, she hit Dr. Horror’s cybernetic visor, shattering the glass and severing the neural circuits that linked him to his machines. The scientist dropped to his knees, dizzied and struggling for breath as blood trickled down his forehead.

Barbara stepped closer, projecting a containment hologram directly onto the fallen woman's chest and pinning her arms with energy shackles.

"System isolated. Dr. Horror is out of action, and the frequency data has been copied," Barbara announced, wiping sweat from her brow as she looked at Daria with a mix of respect and caution.

Daria holstered her baton, her expression impassive, and gazed at the defeated scientist with utter disdain.

"Good. Now let's see if the Queen of Crime is enjoying the show Daddy put together upstairs."
