Chapter 7
by Cliffe
Time for class.
The Nurse's Office.
The trip to the nurse's office was full of moments where John happily took his time spamming the hell out of his Observe skill. Even with only eighteen mana points left in the chamber, at the rate of what seemed like two to three uses of the spell per mana point, John was still left with plenty of mana to grind his ability up and then still have a little bit left over. If he could convince the Nurse to keep him there for the rest of his class or even just give him a note to be late, then perhaps he could make this next hour last long enough to work on his abilities a little more. Specifically things like Theft or Meditation, ones that could hopefully help him long term for leveling or...whatever it was he could use Theft for to improve his life. He eventually came to a stop outside the door to the nurse's office. His hands kept fumbling to close the various pop-ups that he got while looking at the things around him.
But...did it even matter that much to try and power level his way through life like it was some game? What was the point of doing all of this to him? What was the end game for him? John's hands gradually fell to his side as this barrage of thoughts stampeded to the front of his mind.
Okay, sure, if he had superpowers then maybe he could get to the point where he could use them to become the leader of the world or something and then nobody like Frank would ever bother him again...
Yet at the same time, with his powers developing and with what seemed like the ability to just make up skills at his disposal then could people like Frank even bother him anymore in the first place? A subtle frown passed over John's lips as he stood there, eyeing the handle to the door like opening it or not was some kind of hard choice. So far, it hadn't happened, but it was starting to seem like if he really wanted to, he might have actually been able to cast magical spells of some kind. With that in mind, was Frank Dickinson really a threat to him? More than that, did he even want to rule the world? It certainly didn't feel like it...but it was possible that that was just Gamer's mind affecting him. In the end he just resolved to continue going for now, see how the day ended. Besides, no matter what, it wasn't like there had been any monsters for him to face so far like some kind of actual game, right?

"Are you fucking kidding me?" John mumbled after reading through the pop-up. An audible sigh escaped him as he stepped through the door the to Nurse's office. Immediately inside, to the right of John, lined up perfectly in multiple rows against the side wall, was a surplus of empty hospital beds, each one separated by a thin veil of blue medical curtains to allow patients privacy. Beside each bed was a simple monitor, filled with various number and charts for the person in charge here, a table that was usually empty save for a few metallic trays, and a number of tools for giving standard check-ups.
On the other side of the room, off to John's left, was a wall littered with various cabinets, drawers, televisions, and even a coffee maker. The two former types of containers were well stocked and almost overflowing with other kinds of various medical equipment, ranging from simple medicine, to spare emergency surgical tools. The kind of belongings that, despite clearly being seen through a pane of glass over each cabinet, most definitely had a lock and key for each one. In the far back side of the room, opposite of the side John had entered from, was a large, closed glass window with bright sunlight shining in and illuminating the room nicely. Beside the window stood a large full body mirror that John could make out his reflection in.
In the center of the room, now stood up for John's arrival in a long white doctoral coat, was the school nurse. She was a short, pudgy woman with dark coppery skin and a name tag pinned to her chest labeled 'Mrs. Winslow' on the front of it. At her full height, she only came up to John's shoulders. She was so short that she was even **** to look up at John with smiling full cheeks as she held out a hand for him and directed him to sit at one of the nearby beds. Keeping true to his gaming nature, John cast Observe on the nurse, watching as a small pop-up appeared in front of him from his continuous grinding.
Prudence Winslow
Level 13 Doctor
<School Nurse>
281/281 hp
Relationship: -15
John blinked as he stared at the pop-up in front of him while the Nurse adjusted the stethoscope constantly hanging from her neck.
How in the hell did she get to level thirteen?!
"What can I do for you, mister...?" She paused to look at John, her brown eyes centering on John's own gaze just as he closed the pop-up and returned her stare.
"...John Newman." he finished for her as she stepped up close to him.
"Mister Newman." she repeated and John lifted his hand, now merely a dark red in color as the two of them looked at it.
"It's my hand. I, uh..." He paused and stared at the limb for a couple blank seconds. Did he need to say how it really happened? It wasn't like he had sustained permanent damage from that, even as bad as it had been, and he felt like he was going to get plenty of chances for ****. Even if he did say how it happened, the most he could see happening from that action would be spurring Frank to come after him again, and he did not want that. "...slammed it in a door," he grunted finally. Mrs. Winslow just looked at him.
"A door, huh?" She arched a brow at him and John meekly nodded. Had she seen through his lie? Just like that? The redness was spread out over his whole hand, now that he looked at it, and there might have been a little dirt on it from the bottom of Frank's shoes but still... it wasn't like it was that unbelievable, right?
It took a couple moments for the nurse to carefully take John's hand and completely inspect it before she eventually spoke again. In that time, John looked around, casting Observe on the various things in the room, even going as far as to try it on the mirror resting in the back of the room.
Full-body mirror: This specific mirror is big enough that it's length stretches almost six feet up from the floor. It currently holds the image of a hard-working mother and a nerdy virgin in it.
John didn't smile, his expression falling blank as he read through the pop-ups. Who was writing these things?
Medicine cabinet: One of the many cabinets owned by the prestigious Ashcroft Academy. This particular one is filled with various kinds of medicine and other equipment.
Bandage: Healing item. This particular wrap is used for various medical practices, the most common of which is the standard practice of stopping a person from bleeding to ****. Gives +20 health on use. Stops bleeding effects and may slow others.
Useful, but if there was nothing around other than Frank to fight, than he wouldn't really need it. His eyes darted quickly around the room until he found one of the nearby cabinets still slightly ajar enough for him to look at the many different needles and translucent bottles sitting inside. One of which was a green, plastic layered, injection shot that had been placed rather lazily back into the cupboard instead of back into it's proper place.
Adrenaline shot: This injector is full of adrenaline and is used by doctors and other medically trained professionals to help people and save lives. Certain types of addicts will use it to ride a nice fast paced high. Gives additional regeneration for health and mana at a rate of +2 per second for twenty minutes, then slowly decays over the course of an hour. May have side effects.
That was really useful. The mana properties alone could be a crutch for grinding his abilities. As it was now, things like theft, they just cost too much to use whenever he wanted to. He was a little worried about the ambiguous mention of side effects but, whatever it was, he felt like he could handle it for a reward like that. The problem was... if he wanted it, he needed more mana. He just needed a moment...
"Alright," the nurse stated after a moment and pulled away, letting John's hand fall to his side once more. "The good news is, it doesn't seem like anything is broken, so I'm gonna give you an ice pack for your hand and you should be good. You'll have to wait a moment for me to go get one from the cafeteria though, all the ice packs I have went down to the gym for the teams practicing today." The nurse gave him an apologetic frown as she stepped away.
"That's fiiine," John grunted, barely managing to contain his excitement. At this rate, he wasn't even going to have to use any mana to get away with this. He could just walk over to the cabinet and grab the stupid thin-
A loud click echoed throughout the room, cutting through the silence in John's ears and thoughts as the Nurse, for all her laziness and lounging he had seen so far, walked over to the very cabinet that she had left open and closed it. A jingling of keys later, and the cabinet was locked.
"Alright. I'll be right back with the ice pack, you just wait here." And with that, Prudence stepped out of the room, the door closing silently behind her.
"Fuck," John muttered.
What does he do?
