The Next Day
Alex woke up with the kiss still on his lips. Not just the feeling. The whole weight of it. He lay there staring at the ceiling like he had so many nights before. But this time it was different. The frustration that had lived in his chest for weeks felt lighter. Not gone. Just… shifted.
He thought about how long he had waited. All those small moments that built up until they almost hurt. Her hand brushing his at the cafe. Her knee against his under the library table for hours. The way she leaned in close to show him notes and her hair fell on his shoulder. Every single one of those tiny things had felt huge because he had wanted more for so long and kept stopping himself. The delay had turned everything electric. Made his body react to the smallest touch. Made his mind spin with guilt and want at the same time.
Now that he had finally kissed her the relief was real. But it came with its own weight. The long wait had made the kiss feel bigger than it might have otherwise. Like it carried months of tension in one moment. He could still feel how she kissed him back. How she held onto his shirt. How she said “took you long enough” with that soft smile. It should have calmed him. Instead it made the want sharper. Now he knew what her mouth felt like. Knew she wanted it too. And that knowledge sat heavy and warm in his stomach.
He grabbed his phone. Stared at her last message from last night. The smiley. The “sweet dreams.” He typed something. Deleted it. Typed again.
“Last night was good. The studying and… everything. Thanks for staying so late with me.”
He sent it before he could overthink the words too much.
She replied faster than he expected.
Mia: “It was really good. I’m glad we did it. The kiss too :) Made the whole long night worth it.”
He read it twice. Then a third time. She had said it out loud. The kiss. She liked it. The wait hadn’t scared her off. It had maybe even made it better for her too. The psychological part of it clicked in his head in a quiet way. All that built-up tension had turned the moment into something heavier. Something that mattered more because they had both been holding back for so long. The delay had created this deep pull that now felt satisfied but also hungry for the next step.
He got hard just thinking about it. Lying there in bed remembering how her body felt pressed against his in the quiet library. How she made that small sound when he pulled her closer. The guilt that used to come with those thoughts was still there a little. Old habits. But it was quieter now. Overpowered by the memory of her smiling after and walking home with her fingers hooked in his for a second.
He typed back. “I’m still kind of in shock I finally did it. Didn’t want to mess it up again.”
Mia: “You didn’t. I wanted you to. For a while now actually. Just didn’t know how to show it without scaring you off.”
He stared at the screen. She had wanted him too. The whole time. The delayed gratification hadn’t just been in his head. It had been mutual. That realization hit him hard. Made his chest feel full and tight at the same time. The long wait had built something real between them. Something that went deeper than just physical want. It had forced them to talk more. Study together. Share small things. The emotional closeness had grown because the physical stuff stayed slow.
But the impact was still there. Even after the kiss he felt the old insecurity creeping in. What if now that they had crossed that line she expected more? What if he froze again when things moved forward? What if the waiting had made him want her so much that he rushed and ruined it?
He put the phone down and turned on his side. The psychological weight of it all sat with him. The delay had heightened everything. Made every glance and touch feel loaded. Made the first kiss feel like a release and a new beginning at once. It had frustrated him for weeks. Made him doubt himself constantly. But it had also made this thing with Mia feel earned. Real. Worth the quiet torture of wanting her in silence for so long.
He closed his eyes. Body still warm from the memory. Mind still spinning with the new reality. They had kissed. She wanted him back. The long wait was over. But the slow pull between them was still there. Just changed. Deeper now. More real. And the want that had built up for so long was only getting stronger.
He didn’t know what came next. But for the first time in a long time he felt ready to find out without freezing. The delay had done its work. It had made him want her bad enough to finally act. And now that he had, the real story was just starting.
