The Journalist's Connection
I watch him as he speaks, his voice measured, professional. “We’re joined now by Dr. Helena Moreau, a legal expert on the Paradigm. Dr. Moreau, what are the legal implications of today’s press conference?”
The camera cuts to Dr. Moreau, a sharp-faced woman in her fifties. “The legal implications are profound, Marcus. The Whitmore estate has successfully argued that Mocha and Ace’s consent was freely given. This sets a precedent that could legitimize the Paradigm on a national scale.”
Marcus nods, but his eyes are distant. “And what about the sterilization protocols? The ‘spaying’ and ‘neutering’ that these individuals have undergone?”
“The courts have ruled that sterilization is a protected medical procedure when it’s performed with informed consent. The Whitmore estate has been meticulous in documenting that consent.”
I lean forward, watching Marcus’s face. There it is. That flicker of something deeper than professional interest. He’s not just reporting on this. He’s drawn to it. I know that look. I’ve seen it in the mirror.
My phone buzzes again. This time it’s a message from my mother:
“Ruth. I know what you’re planning. Do not do this. Do not destroy this family. Do not become your father.”
I type back, my fingers moving with deliberate calm:
“I am exactly my father’s daughter. And I will not let you destroy what he loved.”
She responds immediately:
“You’re a fool. The world will destroy you. They’ll tear you apart. They’ll take everything you have. Your reputation. Your money. Your freedom. Everything.”
“Let them try.”
I put the phone down and turned back to the television. Marcus Stone is still speaking, still trying to appear objective, still failing to hide the longing in his eyes.
He wants what Mocha and Ace have. He wants to belong. He wants to be seen. He wants to surrender.
He just doesn’t know it yet.
