What's next?
The Family Grows [End]
After a few minutes with each of us lost in our own thoughts I break the silence.
“You okay?” I rub Lucian’s back then kiss his pink hair, at some point when I was in the house he had switched back into his natural form.
He nods. “Yeah, you?”
“Better. Mom really knows how to pick a guy up.”
He laughs, though there is little humor in it. “Yeah. She’s pretty great.”
“A lot to think about, huh.”
With a long sigh he nods. “Yes and no.” He pets Sloopy’s wide head. “I’m not giving her up…and if I understood correctly the only way to get rid of her is to kill her, so there really isn’t a decision to make. I’d never let that happen. I saved her now I have to live with her. She’s a Devlin now, the family grows by one.” He is silent as he looks at her and scratches behind her ear. “It’s worth it. Sports medicine would have been great but, I’m not going to lie, I was as interested in the hot men as the work itself.”
I chuckle. “I kind of suspected.”
“I’ll figure something out. You can’t keep a good boy down.” He says with admirable confidence.
“The best boy.”
He grins and a light blush colors his cheeks. “Maybe I’ll take a year or two off after I graduate. Just figure things out. That actually sounds nice. Get off of the school treadmill for a bit, get some perspective. Yeah, this might be for the best.” The pair of us begin walking, not toward any particular destination but just walking together. Sloopy pads along close behind. “And who knows what the future might bring. Maybe I could get a loan from Devany to buy some property near Columbus. A farm or something. Somewhere private. I would have to commute but I’d be home every night. Maybe…maybe you and Ves could come too. Anything is possible.” He takes my arm and leans his head into my shoulder. “For now I’m glad I get to stay home awhile. I really want to be your boy while I can.”
This brings a smile to my face. “Yeah, that sounds real nice.” I put my arm around his shoulder, then quip. “A farm? I could imagine you as a farmer. Overalls, cowboy hat, country music blaring from your pick up truck, the works. You did say you had a thing for rednecks.”
He giggles and butts his shoulder into me. “Shut up.” Looking up he asks. “I know I can’t have your heart but I think we can have some fun until I find someone.”
“I know we can.” I pinch him.
“I’m glad they won’t stop us.”
“As if they could.”
“So what about you? Are you going to get a job?”
“Eventually.” I say. “I can’t just lounge around here forever. But, like you, I might take a little time first. I need to deal with some shit. That angel thing fucked me up pretty bad.” My eyes scan back to the angel’s former servant following us. It would always be a reminder of what happened out there. But feeling Lucian safe and healthy at my side helped me recall why I’d done it. Devlin’s stuck together, Devlin’s looked out for each other, no matter what. While not healed my wounded psyche was already on the road to recovery. “I would do it again if I had to.” I squeeze him tight. “I’ll be okay.”
He leans in closer, telling me without words that I had his support. It felt good. We walk slowly up the drive, the gravel crunching beneath our shoes.
“Jacob?”
“Yes?”
“That tree over there.”
“What about it?”
“It would make a great hiding spot.”
Our course turns toward it, both of us already of the same mind. I ask with mock innocence. “Now why would we need a place to hide?”
“Well, I could suck your cock out here in the open…”
“…but what would our parents say?” I finish his sentence. We both laugh as we tuck in behind the old oak.
“I love you Jacob.” He says as he lowers to his knees and unzips my fly.
Running my fingers through his soft pink hair I smile. “I love you too sweetie.”
